Famous Single Shot Hunting Rifles

I get that, but it could be a lot leaner than it is... with the thickness and squared off rear, it looks very blocky on an otherwise nice rifle. They could also mill a continuation onto the front of the reciver and have the quarter rib flow into that... it would really streamline the design. Shooters could then choose their ring height based on their needs.

I don’t see the model 10’s rib as oversized at all. I think it looks and functions as it should.

My problem with the model 10 is it’s priced right where it’s very tempting but after seeing how Steven Dodd reworks the lever and triggerguard I think it’s all I would see when handling the factory version. And after spending the additional money to have him correct it, you would be better off starting with the Hagn. Just my $0.02

Guess it depends on the budget, Ruger 1`s work and can be fixed up very nicely. Not sure if Saroka is still building them. If you like a gun with a hammer, the 1885 Hiwall is heavier, but are a great gun, a modern Low wall is the equivalent of Ruger , at the least. the Dakota may be a question with Remington going under, it was Dean Miller`s action originally, Dakota made some mods. Butch Searcy has a nice one. Hagn is as ggod as they get.
Most of the modern European Kipplaufs have the same action, your pocketbook is the limit, Haenel, Merkel, Blaser, Verney-Carron, Heym, Sabatti, Kreighoff, Fabarm, probably Beretta, Guerini, and various other custom guns all the way up to Fanzoj. Think almost anyone who makes rifles over there makes a Kipplauf as well. There are some nice used ones over here if you search a bit. Calgary Shooting Center has a few around their store.

Have yet to find my single shot.

1. A few years ago, I had a Ruger No. 1 International fullstock in 30-06. It felt heavy and awkward. It wasn't the actual weight but the balance that seemed all wrong. Also, for some reason it really belted me with recoil....buttstock design?..anyway, I didn't like it and moved it on down the line. Maybe a lighter calibre would have been better.

2. Saw and handled a nice old minty (exc. bore) Farquharson in .303 British at the last big spring Calgary Gun Show, just before it opened for the first day. I asked how much, and the reply was a firm "Fourteen-Five"($14,500.) I went back to my table to get my son to show it to him. By the time we got back, it was gone. "Sold." All before the show opened.

3. Modern Dakota rifles are very well made. The Model 10 fullstock could be nice in .303. The base model starts around around $9500.(Can.) plus tax. and there are plenty of upgrade options.

You know this thread was 2 years old right?

When Don Allen had the company they would sell just the action. I don't know if they do that anymore. I would rather just take an action to a gunmaker and work with him.

I'm betting that Dakota would sell you an action if you asked them. After all, manufacturers like selling their products. They like making money. However, I expect it won't be cheap, although probably not the crazy money that Martin Hagn charges these days for one of his actions in the white.

Whenever I have emailed Dakota with a question they have replied very quickly...within a couple of days at least.

That flat sided lever looks like something that would be on a modern Henry or T/C. Yuck.

When asked if the miller was basically the same as the model 10. “Nothing like the Miller action which was designed and made with absolutely no concern for the aesthetic.” - Steven Hughes.

what about TCR 83 and 87. Picked up the double trigger 83 with 223, 243, 270 and 30-06 barrels at a gun show a few years back. Carries nice, shoots well and covers most of the bases. JD Jones used to do them up in 450 NE

They also have a "Build and Price" function on their website, in case you really want to depress yourself.

Having tried a large number of single shot actions, the Martini Henry gets my vote as the fastest and most accurate single shot I've used. The remington rolling block probably saw more action around the world, and also one I like.

I have a couple of martini rifles and love them but the biggest flaw for a hunting rifle is that a good many don t have a safety also they are kind of limited to cartidge length.Of the two I have both 22 sporting rifles one has a safety the other doesn t though I still use both for rabbit hunting the one with the safety is easier to use

Last week you all helped me on famous lever guns. I bought one and I thank you again.

I want o get a really cool/nice single shot rifle. Perhaps not right away but it is something I am interested in.

What are the most famous/best brands and models of single shot rifles?

The only one I know of is a Ruger #1 and I do like them.

I am thinking about doing one up for African plains game.

Thank you in advance.
