Farm Predators

There are no guidelines set out for an appropriate fashion of protecting livestock other then you have the right to protect your livestock and livelihood……. Use your imagination and do what you think is best for you. Police and Game Wardens are a little skidish about confirming the legality of discharging a firearm at night to every Tom, #### and Harry.

Be very careful to never mix up hunting with protecting livestock, that’s where the water starts to get hot and sea’s can get a little rough.

There are a couple farmers that allow us to hunt birds all fall on their land, I've been trying to clean up the coyotes that are hanging around their yards, so far this fall I have taken 6 coyotes at 2 different farms and all have been within a couple hundred yards of the farm buildings, I suspect locals that had dens near by in the summer as 3 of the 6 have been pups, one fellow said he hasn't heard a coyote in over a week, Foxpro caller and a CZ 527 in .223 with 52gr hollow points @ 3300 works very well.

Got up early today, drinking coffee in the shop by 5am. Went out with the sightmark to see if anything was out, saw this guy having breakfast at the calf I put in the pasture.

More coffee, went out with the rifle and tripod as the sun was coming up.

Still there, 175 gr matchking and he didn't take another step. Wasn't the best shot placement considering it was only 215 yds, my excuse is I'm still getting used to the tripod!

In the second pic you can see the calf from my setup.

Anyway, a good start to the day.

I actually have a electronic call. When I've tried it, nothing comes. BC interior. Coyotes I've shot have all been with my hunting rifle....375rum, 338wm, 7x57. Might seem overkill, but shot placement isn't super picky. Not a lot of resistance to create expansion. My 260 partition from the rumdidnt even make a mess @3050ft/sec. Pretty sure you woke up the neighbourhood..

We have approx 70 laying hens, and in the summer 100+ meat birds. They aren't free-ranging birds, but are outside during the day.

We also got 2 calves recently, and frequently get coyote and fox visitors around the barn and coop.

My wife has plans for adding more animals around the place, and my question is Sask specific.

Can anyone point me toward any regs regarding predator control for farm animal protection? More specifically, predator control at night.

Cabelas sells (or sold) a Sightmark Wraith ir setup. I picked one up with the intention of putting it on a rifle but I'm not 100% sure about the regs regarding this specific use.

I've used the Wraith as a handheld unit to watch coyotes in the pasture at night but that's it.

Any insight/links to regs would be appreciated.

hunting and defense of livestock are 2 different things in sask.

There are farms within a half mile to the south of me and one a little further to the northeast. The pic showing my view to the calf is northwest, and the next farm that direction is miles. I've covered the area well and know where occupied farms are. Unfortunately most of my pasture is to the south but that's out of bounds. I don't need a coyote or deer on the ground bad enough to risk landing a shot in someone's yard.

Fortunately the traffic mostly comes across out of the trees and pasture west of me. I also have access to 8 or 9 other quarters and the owners are happy whenever I tell them another one is down.

Bringing the neighbors over to try out different toys on my range has its perks. Sharing a bottle of whiskey once in a while doesn't hurt either.

And you don't have one stinkin dog on your yard? And you have cattle and chickens?

Are you a law enforcement officer fishing for a conviction, or one of those anti gun freaks trying to seek some sick confession?

Your story seems so unreal.

You got me. I joined in 2008 and have been posting pictures I found on the internet in an attempt to lure someone into slipping up so I can nab them.

I asked a clear question about regs in the beginning and the conversation sort of turned into a general coyote hunting discussion. Never once did I ask anyone to disclose whether or not they had done anything illegal.

If we are gonna be all suspicious, and accuse someone of being an "anti-gun freak"

You've been here since '06, don't show your location, and have a zero trader rating...
