Farm Rifle

I've got a smoothbore 9mm garden gun that shoots both shot shells and 9mm ball ammo out to about 50 yds quite accurately. It's quiet and hasn't seemed to bother my neighbors when dispatching squirrels or gophers. Nice little acreage gun for sure.

Those garden guns can handle standard pressure 9mm?!

I have a 17 Ackley Hornet, I love it, ricochets are almost non existent, but it's marginal on coyotes (in my mind, I know many will disagree). It also isn't a "quiet" rifle, when compared to a 22lr, neither is the standard Hornet. I also have a G2 contender with a 24 inch 38 Special barrel and a 27 inch 32 H&R mag barrel. The 38 shoots 125 grain jacketed into cloverleafs at 50 yds. and if I keep the velocity around 1100 or 1200 fps it seems to be about the same noise level as a 22lr. The 32 is much the same with a cast 120gr. They both thump the target surprisingly hard out to about 120 yds. However, both the 38 and the 32 are more prone to ricochets. I'm not sure there's any free ride, if you want the energy downrange you've got to pay the piper, one way or the other.

That last line, right there, pretty much covers it.

As does manbearpig's post above. The one about choosing ammo types for the job at hand.

I've shot enough coyotes and dogs with a .22 to know the effectiveness. And at ranges in excess of the 50 yards in the OP's post. And dispatched enough butcher critters, and crippled or wounded larger animals to have a pretty good idea on it's effectiveness when well placed, on far larger.

Without getting in to shooting really oddball stuff, or reloading down to noise levels that you think are acceptable if you want quiet, you are not getting reasonably quiet, from anything that has more snot than a regular .22 LR.

Ruger makes something that fits the bill perfectly for this type of application. They even call it a "ranch rifle". Alas, us peasants aren't allowed to own such a dangerous weapon in this country any more because of the jerk offs in power at the moment :jerkit::rey2.

I’m thinking this just a bad time to be trying to find different rounds right now. Going to try some stingers, velocitors and minimag when I find some.

I was just about to write what you just suggested . try the Velocitors . they are a heavier bullet . 40 grain going 1435fps . the mini mags are 1260 fps and they are a 36 grain bullet and the stingers are a 32 grain bullet at 1640 fps ?? . going from memory . the Velocitors will give you more penetration. good luck in you choice and go for a head shot on the critters .
