recently become very interested in fast draw and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest good dvd/books for me to read to get started?
not aware of any fast draw in kamloops area, see that alta has a couple of clubs listed.
watched quite a few youtube of munden, darby etc.

Phone, Langley's Rod and Gun Club and ask to speak to Den Robinson. (or go on their wesite ). Don is vice chairman for FD in Canada, he'll tell you everything you need to know. Tell him I sent you!

Are you interestred in thumbing or fanning? Do you have any FD guns yet?

sorry for not answering your questions OK, I believe thumbing would be my interest, although having no experience, I may find fanning to be better for me.

I don't have any FD guns yet, was wondering about starting out with something like the Chaparral 1873 SA, as I am retired and on a 'fixed' budget.

plus I'm thinking that 45 cal is more appealing than 38.
then I'd also have to get set up with a rig as well, but I'm wondering what is a good beginner rig w/o having to lay out a bunch of money, only to find that FD (hard as it may sound) isn't for me?

I realize from my web surfing, that Ruger or Colt make the top of the line stuff, and even it needs to be tuned for competition, as well as a different hammer if I were to go to fanning.

If it turns out that I really get hooked, then I can always upgrade, perhaps recouping some cost by selling my beginner set-up.

I'd welcome any insight you may be willing to provide

Langley Fast Draw Club is founded over 40 years a go by fanners. Dennis Robinson is exclusively fanning the gun. 90% of the people there are fanning their guns coz they are WFDA members.
But is true: thumbing is the cheapest to start. Just buy any SA, buy a 30$ spring kit and make the action lighter. Then buy any traditional holster(doesn't matter how cheap is) and u're good to go.
Dennis Robinson will teach u how to thumb if that is your choice. But he would gladly teach u fanning.
The painful truth about fanning is that the gun is expensive. The leather is a special one too.

Better go there and talk to Den and he'll explain it to u better than I can do it writing. Go and see for urself both styles. I bet a bag of popcorn u will like more fanning than thumbing.

Fast Draw exist only in BC and Alberta. There is only one guy (WFDA member) in Saskatoon, SK nobody in Manitoba, nobody in Ontario, only one guy (me) in Quebec (also WFDA member) and nobody all the way to Atlantic Ocean.

To explain really fast: thumbing is the slowest(but cheapest to start), fanning is very fast(but quite expensive the gun and holster).
And just to make it clear for everyone: from all fast draw styles there is one above thumbing or fanning. Remember: NOTHING is faster than twisting.
Twisting is the fastest thing a human being does.

If anyone is curious to see the whole deal live I invite u all in Aldergrove,BC on 21 and 22 this month at the Canadian Nationals held under the WFDA circuit and rules.
It is an Open contest which means all styles, all guns (modified and stock) and all holsters allowed. Come and see for yourselves which style u like and which is faster.
Beside the over 5000$ in prizes there are 200$ for the fastest shot of the contest(few guys including me will fight for those 200$).
Who's living close is worth the trip. Come and see ladies who can shoot faster than I can blink.
LOL, I'm not joking. Will be fun.
