Anyone else ever run this drill?

https://pistol-training.com/fastest

I'm really enjoying it lately, seems to cover all the bases.

Reaction time to buzzer.
Holster draw speed.
Precision shots to box.
Reload speed.
Recoil management for 4 shot string.

It might be the perfect drill for measuring speed, accuracy and weapon manipulations.
I cant seem to break 7 seconds, but hopefully I'm on my way.

Try it and share your results!

it's not a drill, it's a test. Fundamentals Accuracy Speed TEST. it is not meant to be used as a drill. you should be practicing the components of it separately and then, testing yourself with it.

Slavex no need to nitpick on semantics. This is a test of your skills, in that it's timed. But it is also a skills development drill, I watch my times and record development.

It's not entirely a semantic argument; the originator of the FAST was very specific about the his belief that it should not be "drilled". The point of the exercise was to test fundamentals, accuracy, and speed. Todd's idea was that your performance on the FAST should be incidental to your skills development. Drilling the FAST is sometimes called "fastbagging" - getting a better score on the FAST than your overall skill level really supports.

That was Todd's idea, anyway.

Interesting.
Generally I run the dot torture drill first, then practice some timed doubles, or Mozambique's from draw, before capping the session off with the FAST.
I'll bear this concept in mind.

It sounds like you're doing it exactly how he intended, anyway. I mean that was his take on things; obviously this stuff can take on a life different than the vision of the creator but as long as you're not spending a ton of time just getting reps in on the FAST, I think you're good to go. Your approach of Dot Torture + timer work is pretty much along the lines of how he used to train people.

Gave this a try last week. First run was 4.61, second run 4.46. Seems like a good test to keep track of progress. I will probably incorporate this into the start of future practice. I never practice slide lock reloads so they were slow, could prob shave a few tenths there. Using a 2011 and competition setup, normal holster thou.

First run: 4.61
1.59 - Draw on 3"x5" box
0.51 - Split on 3"x5" box
1.89 - Slide Lock Reload to 8" circle
0.20 - Split on 8" circle
0.22 - Split on 8" circle
0.20 - Split on 8" circle

Second run: 4.46
1.62 - Draw on 3"x5" box
0.48 - Split on 3"x5" box
1.77 - Slide Lock Reload to 8" circle
0.21 - Split on 8" circle
0.20 - Split on 8" circle
0.18 - Split on 8" circle

Great scores. Did you use a Hawaiian shirt or a regular vest for a cover garment?

Take Care

I'm ashamed to admit it's been months since I've tested myself with this.

It's competition season though, so my priorities lie elsewhere. I have plans to work hard to get past the 5 second wall this fall/winter.

The FAST was intended to be shot from concealment.

As a test it is an almost perfect bellweather for overlearned pistol skills.

As a drill, I think there are better ways to spend your time.

Trying to keep this thread alive as I believe if more people pushed themselves by testing their skills, we would have less prolification of derp.

Here's a video of my last recorded FAST, (at the end of a video of some common drills with a PX4).

I used my IPSC comp gear under a stupid looking fishing type vest, so I was not properly equipped for the test, and I looked stupid.

5.46 clean.

He's right. Developing muscle memory for 1 specific test, is not a true reflection of your overall skill level. When training open action reloads for example, you should always stagger the number of rounds in your mags. That way you react to the open action, and not the number of rounds fired until you know you'll be empty.
