Fastest hunting rifle to load for one shot.

you keep your bolt action with the bolt open don't you? so grab it & throw a round in pointy end first, close the bolt & voila!

That is what I woudl do..It's pretty damn fast to drop a cartridge in the action and close the bolt.:dancingbanana:

I'd vote a Benelli R1 semi auto in a long action so you don't fumble the dahm round getting it in the chamber before pushing the magic button slamming the bolt closed. What ever ground you critter has gained since the slam of the door...the crio barrel and sub moa accuracy will quickly gain back for this rifle. I'm very impressed with them!

I've always liked the Browning A-Bolt with the floor plate/mag combo

The mag clips on the floor plate so its just a slam up and throw the bolt and your in business.

But... I really like my BLR. once the mag is in its pretty quick to cycle.

He said the "mag out of reach".

Both choices of Browning's are bad for this scenario. Without the magazine in the BLR, you can't just toss a round in the port, it will fall out the bottom of the rifle.

The A-Bolt, even if the magazine is in and the floor plate closed, that stupid design screws you for this scenario. The magazine sits so deep that when the cartridge is not partially in the magazine angled upwards, the shell just get pushed into the butt end if the barrel under the camber mouth.

You can toss a shell in many of the pushfeed bolt rifles. Not the A-Bolt with many of the chambering tho. May be different with the fat short mags.

My Ruger #1A... it wears it's ammo in a buttstock shell holder. Grab, flip lever down, slip out a round and chamber in 1 motion when gun is at the shoulder, close lever, bang.

I agree with the bolt action theory, it is way faster (with the bolt open) than a lever, pump or semi. Single shot might be a close second.

A Pump shottie would be Hands down the Fastest of the Bunch...
Huge loading gate to drop a shell into and slam the pump closed while bringing it up and BOOM.........
When I competed we were limited to 2 rounds at a time in the Old Pumps to make things fair for the Doubles.........
At my best with the Shotgun (Winchester Model 97) staged on a table action open & empty...I could at the beep get off 4 aimed shots at about 5 seconds, single loading shells ;)

And I was Far from One of the Best :)

For the Action open drop one in scenario.......tough to Beat a Pump Shottie.

But then Who Cares.........Nobody Road Hunts here anyways :D

I have to mirror wetcoaster's remarks. Driving with a few shells in between the fingers is something I always did driving for bush chickens on the northern roads. Very fast and keeps you focused. Nowadays (financially better days) for bigger critters, I trust to a magazine which is kept in the stock of my steyr scout. Its never "loaded" in the truck, though the magazine is always with the gun and ready as can be.

whatever gun you own that you are most familiar with and dont have to consiously go throught he motions of loading. Should be able to have your gun loaded and waiting to go by the time you are in a position to safely/legally shoot. IMO

I have to agree,

This is the most inteligent post I have seen all year.:D :dancingbanana:

Well, if you leave the action open on any rifle, it's gonna be a tad faster.
Here's a consideration for you.
All you scope guys are losers :p
You have to roll your rifle on it's side to load one shot.
Also, most removable magazine fed rifles have a big empty hole when the mag isn't in there, making you put the cartridge in the chamber, not just drop it in.
So, bolt advantage goes to the internal mag rifles. But you still have to reach around that scope, if you're using one.
The BLR and most Marlins are side eject, and that means you have to roll the rifle to load or the cartridge might fall out or jam.
My vote of course goes to the oldfashined top eject '94 winchester, in the 30-30 chambering.
No shaking required here, just drop the round in the top, it's contained on both sides, and supported by the shell carrier, so it can't go wrong, and slam it home.
I'd add the single shots here, but as I don't normally hunt with one, it just aint gonna happen.

Maybe if you could spell "Intelligent" I would agree with you...:p
Just hacking on ya wet toaster...;)
I agree with you for sure... no bull about road hunting... no trolls slamming other guys choice in guns... just solid advice and well thought opinions... very refreshing:)

I am put my vote in for the Ruger #1 also, but I am specifying the 375 H&H Mag. This long tapered case just slides in so smoothly into the chamber that I can load it faster than my Ruger M77 MKII in 30-06.

I have also gone to a wrist cartridge carrier; the rounds are always there, and I never have to worry about losing them whether I am in the truck, or in the field.

I too was wondering when one of those from "under the bridge" would inject his nickels worth thinkin it was a dollar:D

Fastest would go to a single shot with a loading ramp, such as the Ruger #1, or Browning '78, provided that a scope does not cover tha loading port. I think a push feed bolt action would come in a very close second because once the round is dropped on top of the follower, all you have to do is close the bolt. I have found this to be very fast when I load ammo which is too long for the magazine.

Break action or Ruger #1.

Pumps,or a lever with a mag is very easy to load fast also. All you have to do is leave the action open and have an empty mag in the rifle.Drop a round in the ejection port close action.Easy as that with no fumble.

I haven't ever seen a huge "whatever" when I've seen a game animal from the truck on the way to a hunting spot, I'm satisfied with meat animals but I find that frantic jerky activity is more alarming to a deer or bear than slow calm movement.

I hunt only with bolt actions, none of them with a removeable magazine, so in the the case you describe, I have a cartridge in each of at least two if not three or four pockets ready all the time, so if I see something, I try to stop out of sight of the critter if possible, but if not, stop, move slowly, open the action, slide one up the spout and close the action quietly.

The Remington 700 is quieter than my Mauser or Enfield.

I usually have my actions half open withthe rifle sitting on jackets or a blanket in the extra-cab portionof my truck behind the driver's seat.

Some bears will take off at the click of the action closing.
