Fat bucks

To-day I finished butchering a 9-point buck that I shot opening day of BP season , and was amazed at the amount of fat on/in his body . He had a layer of fat almost 3 inches thick on top of his hind quarters . I took out handfulls of fat from inside his body cavity .
Does this mean a cold winter coming, or just a well fed animal ?
He sure is a tasty animal ...the Missus and I have had (in order) Back strap steak pan-fried, oven-baked barbecued ribs and lastly tonight had barbecued back strap steaks . Delicious .
I didn't get all the fat out of the ribs but it (the fat) was very tasty...too bad the fat won't freeze well

Storing up fat for the rut!! Need that extra fat for the energy he was going to be burning while spreading his seed, banging the broads, doing the does, etc.

A little extra for winter doesn't hurt too.

Got an alfalfa fed mulie like that on Oct. 13. in B.C.

Same deal, three inches of fat on the hind end, brisket and ribs so fat that when we bake them I'll bet there'll be two inches of grease in the pan.

i would believe this more then old folk lore of ........lots of fat means a long cold winter like who started that?i know i heard of from my dad,about 40 years ago..just wondering were he got it from

Not yet .
The peak of the rut is considered to be very close to November 11, each year .
The bucks are pushing each other around but not in a serious way...but then I haven't been out for 2 weeks ....
My son describes the deer at his place(where I do most of my hunting ) as quietly feeding on the second growth alfalfa/clover fields ....i.e. no frenetic running around as of yet . Tuesday(just before dark) he counted 34 deer with only 7 bucks ...I think we will thin out some of the does this year ....after the rut .

we were moose hunting up your way in the Cedar Narrows and saw plenty of deer this year but the season opened the day we left
