Father wants to become firearm owner, anti gun family prevents him

If your mom is dead set against a gun in her home, your dad is outta luck since she'll have to sign off on it.

I don't have much input here as I just recently got my PAL and I also live on my own. But, some of my family and friends asked "why" I wanted my PAL? Not one of these people have ever shot a gun. I think once they've been shown that firearms when used in a safe and responsible manner, can actually be a lot of fun! Even after I did my PAL and explained how the course went and what I learned, they started changing their tune fairly quickly. It sounds to me like you just need to do your thing on your own when you're able to. Don't bring it up anymore and maybe they'll start asking questions. Although, you may have to sneak your dad out to go shooting some time when the time comes! :D

Part of living in Canada means we are free to choose what hobbies we wish to participate in, providing they are legal.
That includes the desire to acquire PAL/RPAL licenses, and appropriate firearms thereafter. No family member can prevent you from doing this if you are over the age of 18, as they are not free to make decisions of that nature for you.

If your father truly wants to get his license and a firearm for target shooting, he has the power to do so. He can also look into off-site secure storage if storage inside the house is the true issue.

Your Dad is an adult. If he wants a gun tell him to go get himself one. I'm not sure I would personally use a MilSurp rifle to try to sway an anti. A bolt action, more traditional looking firearm might be a good start. You could always get your PAL and buy him an SKS that lives at your house and you could go shooting together.

Op, how old are you?-edit saw you answer that earleir. Your best bet might be waiting until you are 18. Get your PAL and buy as many SKS's as you want. It's great to see young people show interest in the sport but waiting might be your best option
