favorite .22lr ammo

I notice nobody has mentioned Remington's 'Thunderbolt' ... picked some up for plinking (on sale) and it has got to be the dirtiest most unreliable .22LR I've ever fired. Tonnes of primer-struck duds (3 different guns). I really like Remington's 22 Subsonic - if you can get it to cycle your action.

I've been hard-pressed to discern any difference between Winchester's T22 and the cheaper 'Wildcat 22' ($0.05 vs. $0.03 / round). The T22 is rated at 100fps less muzzle velocity than the T22, but in a pistol it's not tangible. I'll be buying lots more of the Wildcat in bulk (Lebaron's has it).

Stingers and Yellow Jackets are fun to shoot - the Stingers are almost double the price of the yellow-jackets, and of course cannot be used in a 'match' chamber due to the extra long casing.

The American Eagle branded 'Federal' ammo is $0.02 / round less than the Federal Game-Shok (and it appears to be the same stuff).

Of course... the most expensive 22LR ammo isn't going to break anybody's piggy bank.

/gc.

The worst I ever tried is the Wildcats... dirty to a new level!

The American Eagle stuff groups horribly in my rifle.

I agree, its funny stuff. It doesn't group (at all) in my 1022 with Clerk barrel, the CZ452 tollerates it aprox .70" at 50m, and the 22/45 doesn't seem to mind it. The 36gr copper washed hollow point feeds well. Odd that it comes in 40 packs instead of 50.

Wildcats are the crappiest craptacular crap that I've ever used in my mossberg semi. Super dirty, won't group and too many duds. On the other hand, Remington Thunderbolts are my favorite for plinking and I like the coated lead bullet - it doesn't foul up my barrel as bad as raw lead and is still cheaper than copper plated. The copper plated federal bulk packs are so-so.

For shooting creatures, I love Velocitors, Stingers, Quik-Shok and Yellowjackets.

What are your favorite types/brands of .22lr ammo?

I prefer CCI Mini Mags, fast snappy clean burning, consistent, copper not wax coating, 1260fps, no duds.....

I been using them since 1985, no problem, I can't find any better for the price, except some hot loads, like Vipers....

The CCI Standard Velocity groups exceptionally well in my Marlin 980V.

Also, the CCI St.Vel. groups very well in my Krico, but about 1/3 of them are misfires. Then I chamber them again and they work. I thought there is a problem with the rifle, but it doesn't do that with any other ammo.

Tie:

Remington Yellow Jackets. Suck a deep cone hollow point.

Remington Sun-sonics. SOOO quite. Comes in handy sometimes.

I can't get winchester wildcats to work with any consistency in any of my 4 semi auto rifles or handguns.

for general all round plinking I find federal bulk packs from walmart the best. I don't have a box on hand right now to see exactly what they are called but they come in the blue box.

Oh and grayrc you might want to check into the real high end rimefire target rounds before you say no .22lr will break the bank. I've seen some types of Eley go for between 15 and 20 dollars retail for 50 rounds.

Is it worth it??? I've seen many different expensive brands patterned using a walther gsp (i own a gsp but haven't had the time or the money to play with the ammo yet!) and some super expensive rimefire will shoot absolutey amazing groups that regular ammo has no chance of doing. It is dependent on your firearm though.

For consistant accuracy and hard hitting shot to shot repeatability you can't find a better round than the Winchester superX HP..it's my workhorse .22 and I buy briks of them

For target work: Federal gold, or Eley 10X (more expensive than T22s but worth it in a good rifle when you see the target)

For red misting rodents: the CCI stinger...but for sheer fun on gophers, crows and magpies..CCI fragmenting rounds.....but it still isn't as much fun as the .17mach2RF ;)

The Blazers are indeed an excellent round. I have not found a gun to date that does not like them...too bad on the supply issues...:(

My S&W model 41 likes the CCI Blazer. I bought those at CT. in Richmond and Cambie in Vancouver. My S&W is very picky but she likes those. I hope I could buy more. Anybody knows where I can buy some in Lower Mainland B.C.. Thanks.
