Favorite .308 bullet for Deer/Moose.

I finished working up loads for my .308. I am looking at a load to use for both Deer and Moose.

The rifle is a .308 win Mod 70 Pre64 with a 22 inch feather wt bbl.

I started with 4 bullets, all 165 gn, Swift Scirocco , Accubonds,
Sierra Gameking SPBT, and Hornady BT interbonds. In my rifle both the Gameking SPBT and Hornady BT interbonds grouped at 1 inch or less at 100 yards. Suprisingly the other 2 turned in 2-3 inch groups.

So for those of you with experience which of the following 165gn bullets (mvel 2600fps) would you prefer.

Sierra GameKing SPBT 165gn .308

Hornady BT Interbond 165gn .308

Thanks for your input.

I would take the Hornady IB over the Sierra, the Hornady would probably penetrate deeper.

I don't know how far you will have to shoot your moose but for my style of hunting I would rather take a Accubond that shoots 3" groups over an Interbond that shoots 1". Especially if you are limiting yourself to only 165g bullets.

I load the 165 Sierra game King for vetually ALL the fellas that I load 308 for.
it just plain works - super accurate and gets the job down NOW!!
It has done frontal head shots, shoulder shots, quartering , the works on elk as well as moose.
The guys that I load for are not concerned about what a bullet looks like after it kills a critter, they are concerned with killing a critter with one well placed shot....

Good to know, I'm going to track down a box of 'em.

Roberti11, how does your featherweight .308 do with 180 grain bullets? I have an almost identical rifle (not a pre-64 though) and it won't shoot 180's worth a damn.

The only 180 gn load I have worked up is for:
.308, 180, Nosler BalTip 30180, these were from Reloaders Seconds in the US, the Mvel was ~2550 fps.

Groups were ~ 1 inch. I went with the 165 to cut recoil, especially since my 14 year old son will be hunting with this load as well.

Here's an elk my "wimpy" 150's knocked down....:)

I'm not man enough to shoot a 308 Norma like some people:rolleyes::p

Russ...

the whimpy thing couldn't even make it all the way through:D

I'll get some training pads THEN you can maybe shoot the norma......maybe

If it was me I'd use a 165 gr Nosler Partition. Soft enough to open up at moderate velocity but will hold together at point blank speeds. They're still the best bullet on the market as far as I'm concerned.

May not have made it through......but it went far enough:D

Mister....I need a 308Norma mag to shoot my moose at 7and a half paces...;)

Russ...

of what you have i would use the scirroco. i have used in a 300 mag for a few years. from long range to close up ive had very good performance. only recovered a couple most blow straight threw.
