Favorite bullet for Marlin 45-70

My son just picked up a Marlin guide gun. I want to get him set up with a mold for it this Christmas. Just wondering if anyone has a favorite bullet that works well in the 1895. Thx!
 
I like the Lee hollow base and the standard base. Both 405gr. The hollow base is only a single though. I also lapped my double 405 flat base to drop a little bigger for my rifle.
I haven't explored the higher quality or more expensive options yet. I haven't found a need.
 
Agree with SLUG, the RCBS300FN is wonderful in my 450 Marlin. ( ballistic twin of the 45-70). Also great is their 45-405FN-GC but the recoil of that one can be hard. I can load the 300gr slug with a small load of shotgun powder and recoil is quite mild or load it up to be a great deer getter.
 
Thanks for the suggestions... I think I might get a 300 gr and a 405, just to cover all the bases:) We bought some 300 gr Fusion factory stuff to get us through hunting season, and he is finding that recoil very manageable so I think we will have a lot of (much cheaper) fun once we get casting...
 
Something to be aware of when choosing a mold for a Marlin Lever gun (any tube fed lever gun for that matter) is that a lot of molds are made for the Single Shot buffalo rifles and they have a nose that is too long to feed thru the mag, they can still be shot thru a Marlin but must be fed one at a time thru the ejection port.

I would suggest a flat nose 405 gr or less , round nose are usually too long between the crimp groove and nose...even some of the flat nosed slug molds over 405 have been too long to feed thru my Cowboy.

The 600gr noe was designed to work in 45/70
 
Just spent some time on the NOE site, and I am liking the look of their offerings. Several with no grease grooves for powder coating... Looks like they all crimp high on the bullet to allow for an oal that will load in the Marlin. Has anyone tried the 500gr hollow point? That would be medicine for whatever ails you...

Al had stated that he designed them to work in a lever gun. Believe it was even a marlin.

I have 3 of Al's moulds and a drawer full of other tools. Top notch stuff there.
 
Campro now makes 45-70 bullets picked up some 405gr from budget shooter supply like $85 for 250 copper plated pretty good deal I think. Picked up a Marlin 1895 GSBL for myself over the holidays from Wanstalls can't wait to take it out shooting !
