Favorite coyote bullet

My current favourite is 35 gr Berger in 204. This year I plan to use 25 gr Berger in my 17 Fireball as I’ve not used it on coyotes to date. Only shot one with 223 and had the dreaded splash using a 40 VMax.

I have some 223 loaded up to try using a 50 TNT. Anyone tried those out yet. I am looking for fur friendly though.

I do have allot of Hornady 55 SP with cannelure that I should try in 223 or 22-250 based on reports here. What can I say I like to play around. I need to get off my butt and get to callin!!

My goal is to keep them inside the coyote at any angle from facing to complete broadside. Only exits I get are at 50 yards and under and even then damage is minimal.

Thats the reason i switched to a 223 this year and chose 55gr sgk hp. Even if they exit which im expecting given the slow speed im spitting them out of my 16.5" barrel the hole should be easily repairable. Plus it should be stout enough for a shoulder shot

I just got myself a Tikka M65 in 25-06. I decided to get this caliber for varmints after reading some of your posts in the archive Brybenn talking about the effectiveness of this caliber on crows and coyotes, one in particular where you said that your friend saw you take a coyote at 750 yards and then he ordered a 25-06 that day. Well I have joined the club and I have everything I need now except a shellholder to roll up some cartridges for it. The projectiles I am starting with are the 75g vmax, the 100g nosler BT and the 115g berger. I like the idea of hitting them a bit further out with the vmax to limit damage on well furred ones but many I see are mangey and just need culling. I shoot in an area wide open where shots of 1000 yards are possible (not that I would attempt that) but the 25-06 will certainly stretch my reach over the .204 that I was previously using.

Ive lost land use on the longest fields i could hunt as owners changed so much of my coyote hunting is in woodlots now. I do have some areas where i can shoot across fields but 300 yards is about it. The 2506 is a perfect blend for reaching out with bullets that will fragment and not bounce across frozen fields. A reason i love the vmax. Up the weight to 100 to 120gr and its a beautiful deer rifle. Ive even taken my largest black bear with my 2506. There are many bullets i havent treid but hornady made a flying bomb in their eld x line in 25. It is a varmint bullet when fired from a 2506. My 2506 needs a new barrel and will be barreled heavier and longer for heavier bullets while ill build a 250 savage for my varmint hunting. Love the 2506. Never had to track an animal shot with it.

I have a bag full of what i think are hornady bullets. They range from 54 to 57 grs and when loaded in the canulure and weight sorted they average a little bigger than 2" at 100m whether full power or subsonic. Good enough for inside the trees i guess

Tried a little of everything for bullets in various calibers over the years but currently using varmint 52 gr. Berger's in the 223 and varmint 64 gr. Berger's in the 223AI.
Berger has recently discontinued the 64 gr varmint bullet but I have a good stock pile that should last me for a few years.

When I have had a .223 I ran with 60gr Ballistic tips. They made a small hole in, liquified the inside and RARELY did I have an exit. I'm not sure if these were flukes or not but the four I shot with the setup performed that way. After that I wanted a little more zip and switched to 50 Nosler BT. They seemed more violent but not doing it for the fur.

I've since sold that 223 and have two 22-250's I'm going to be loading for. The one seem to like 40 BT's but I'm going to be trying a 50 gr Varmint grenade If I can get it to stabilize. Second one is a Ruger M77 RSI but it only seems to like 55 gr Fed Fusions. Not the exact bullet I'm looking for.

I've been using the 58gn Vmax out of the 243's for the last 8 years. I've now got a deal going with a guy on the pelts and 4 this season I have blew the crap out of them. I will be looking for a better fur friendly round shortly.

I found 55gr Vmax to be excellent in .223. Those that do exit only have the base exit with a tiny hole. I don't like leaving lead fragments for scavengers, so lately have taken a few with 55gr Barnes MPG which I am pushing at about 3050fps in .223. So far shots have been from 57-180 yards and all have exited, exit holes are very small. All dropped where they stood.

62gr Hornady hollow points in the .223 and 87gr V-Max in the .243 and new for this year and my general carry gun 123gr SST in my Howa Mini 6.5 Grendel in LSS chassis. Hopefully the 123SST will be more fur friendly than the 87V-Max as I have someone who wants the hides this year. I am also seeing more wolf tracks and I felt a little undergunned with a single shot .223 and only charlie spaniels as backup.
