What's your favorite flat based hunting bullet? Tell me about accuracy and on-game performance experiences.

EDIT: Duh, I just realized that I put SGK in there... they're all BT AFAIK...

Any premium is good, but I voted tried and true cheapy. Only because very few hunters reload, in comparison to the majority who buy the cheapes factory ammo available. And because of that, more game is taken every year with plain power points or core-lokts. The bullets really aren't that bad, either. Shoot a shoulder, it may come apart. Shoot them in the lungs, and a hornady interlock soft point will kill just as dead as a trophy bonded.

Hornady interlocks in 7mm and 30 cal have taken most of my deer. When I shot a 270 I used 140 boattails simply because they were the most accurate in my rifle.

Nothing agains boattails but if I was going to use them to hunt with I would want them in a premium bullet. I shot a few deer with the speer 7mm 145 boattails and was not impressed--core separation on both animals I shot with it. were very accurate though.

Trophy Bonded Bear Claws are very expensive but they really are an awesome bullet. I used to use them almost exclusively in my 7mm Mag on moose with never a failure of any sort at all ranges and angles. Come to think of it, I've never recovered one either. The last couple moose & elk I've shot were with the .338 WinMag using 225gr TBBC's and preformance was as expected. Wicked wound channels with bullet holes leaking massive amounts of blood out both sides  The older Barnes X was another favorite I used for years in my .30-06 with total satisfaction :)

Is that for higher BC, or is it that your favorite bullet happens to be a BT?

My favorite hunting bullets are the barnes tsx,mrx and the nosler ballistic tip,all of which are boattails(at least in the calibers and weights that I choose to use).

Hard to beat the Nosler Partition...although the TSX has done very well for me the past few years.

TSX is a BT bullet.

the only FB bullet I hunt with is the partition. I prefer BT, though. Not for any ballistic advantage, but because it seats in the case so much nicer

There are a few models of TSX which are flat based.

I'm with you on seating BT's... much smoother.

when I think of the best flat base I think Nosler Partition, or maybe Swift A-Frame in some cases. My "favorite" would have to be a Hornady Interlock, cuz they're tough to beat for the price, although I have never taken a head of game with them yet.

hornady interlocks in .338 and .270 and .308 always works more than fine, very good accuracy and v.g. terminal results on game, moose , elk, deer , have al been taken with my veriaty of calibers, never found a reason too buy expensive hunting bullets, wade

I forgot about the A-frame... however, do you think it's 'better enough' than the Nosler Partition to justify the price?

Average weight retention of Nosler Partition is around 65-70% vs. the A-Frame at around 90-95%.

Once you have your load developed accurately in your hunting rifle bullet cost is relatively cheap.

There is a reason the A-Frame is chosen more by African hunters than the Partition...it is a BETTER bullet.

I voted "other" because the Alberta Wildcats I use are tremendously accurate, but I would never turn up my nose at a Pro Hunter or Hot core- loaded both for many hunters and have used them myself.
