Favorite Grouse Gun

My favorite is my LC Smith side by side chambered for the 16 gauge. It's the one on the bottom. Points beautifully and I use 2 1/2 inch shells for upland.

While I have been known to shoot ruffed grouse on the ground with a .22 when hungry, I much prefer to hunt them with a pointing dog and take only wing shots. For that i like my Browning Citori white lightning .410 with 3" 6's and IC/Mod chokes.
For sharptails, I use the same gun, same chokes in 16 ga. with 1oz of 6's.

Pudelpointer....GREAT dog!!!

My 2 favourites were a Cooey 39, and a CVA 45 cal Kentucky Rifle (percussion), using .440 RB and 25 gr. of fffG. But then I was shooting mostly spruce hens. Here in the Ottawa area, the grouse are so skittish you'd have to use a shotgun and shoot them on the wing. The good thing, though, is that the bush here is open enough that you could try wingshooting.
 
I love hunting with my old hinges-just brought back to life 16 and 20 ga Iver Johnsons. Also have two 20 ga over/unders in Daly and Sabatti. Then ofcourse, the Tobin Arms 12 ga in full/full for late season rabbits with the hounds!

If I had to pick my favourite, it's the Sabatti-super light, beautiful walnut and a pleasure to use on birds.

I like them... and always have.

I tired to order a new production one from the cabela's fall catalogue and they are back ordered.

For 35 years we hunted with Sheridan C9 pneumatic air rifles in .20 caliber and Benjamin HB20 pistols... we shot hundreds of grouse with those guns. Now we use jacked up semi .22's or if we are running the motocross bikes on old growth roads, we have saddle mounted single shot H&R .410's... for spooky late season birds or sharpies I use a Browning Silver Lightning 12 gauge with 2 3/4" high brass 7 1/2 shot.
 
I've used my faithful old Savage 24H-DL in .22/20 ga. since about 1967. Before that, I used my Dad's Tobin 12 ga. I take the breast and the legs from Prairie Chicken, Ruffed Grouse and Hungarian Partridge.
