Favorite Grouse Gun

While I have been known to shoot ruffed grouse on the ground with a .22 when hungry, I much prefer to hunt them with a pointing dog and take only wing shots. For that i like my Browning Citori white lightning .410 with 3" 6's and IC/Mod chokes.
For sharptails, I use the same gun, same chokes in 16 ga. with 1oz of 6's.

Love the choice in guns (White Lightning 16g owner myself) and love that picture. Makes me want to be out hunting!!

I bought a White Lightning 16 for my son when he was born. He's seven now so still a bit young so I take it out once in a while to break it in nicely for him by the time he starts to use it. While I mostly shoot SxS's, I love that gun!

I've used my faithful old Savage 24H-DL in .22/20 ga. since about 1967. Before that, I used my Dad's Tobin 12 ga. I take the breast and the legs from Prairie Chicken, Ruffed Grouse and Hungarian Partridge.

Here's a shot of my three 24's: .22/20, .22WMR/20, and .223/20

**edit: The top one looked like it was cocked. I checked - it isn't!

Beautiful collection!

Hoytcannon, to each their own. I look for SxS's, I look for older guns, pre WWII, English or Continental with a significant amount of attractive engraving.

Guns like that in 410 gauge are relatively rare and expensive. Like with a Purdey, if you have the money, while rare, they are still easily found.

In 12 and 16 gauge a gun of the sort I'm looking for might range between $2,000 to $6,000. In 410, I don't know, triple those numbers.

Well, last year I used a 16 Gauge Ithaca 37 a lot...

Though my 311 came out quite a bit too...

And the ol' '97 always come out a couple days a year (unfortunately not a 16)

Just acquired this one...should be great for close flushing birds

If I had to pick a favourite...it'd probably have to be the 37

Very nice pictures Cory, I always want to take some but i keep forgetting the camera back at the camp. Hope you kept some of that meat for the off season to get you excited about next year's hunt.

12 Gauge has always been what I've used, just because it what I have in the truck when I'm out hunting, that and my .264 mag, which is maybe overkill for grouse lol. But this year its gonna be my sub2000 9mm. Ammo is cheap and its fun as hell to shoot, seems like a good choice for me

I have an old mossberg bolt action .410...the thing is beat up, no bluing left, but patterns amazing. Light as hell too.

Within 25 yards if it flies it dies
