Favorite gun writer

This has likely been asked before. But what writers do you find you can relate too? Also I guess, which writers do you try to avoid?
My favorites are;
Ross Seyfried, I will buy a magazine with articles of his in them. I find his experiences are similar to my own and his interests. Especially the old rifles and handguns he writes on. He seems to have real world experiences and try all sorts of things. He also doesn't seem to be afraid to give a bad review.
John Taffin, He does great stories on heavy sixguns which I enjoy. Has to be about the top in handgun hunting stories as well as a great storyteller. He must have tried every big sixgun round and gun out there.
I avoid anything by Craig Boddington. I find him pompous and contradicting. I think he will write a positive review for anyone that gives him a rifle or hunt. I know a few guys that have guided him and were not impressed with him. Personally I will avoid books or magazines with anything by Col. Craig in them.
I think we need a magazine with unbiased articles, not supported by the advertising of the gun companies and bent toward their sponsor's products. That might not be possible, but sure would be nice to see.
 
I liked Bob Milek and Bob Hagel John for old timers and John Barsness for someone more current. I also find a lot of the new / current writes to be a bit pompous.
 
I also like Ross Seyfried, and find John Barsness to be a good read. I also don't mind Ron Spomer, Terry Wieland, and Michael MacIntosh. I may not agree with everything they write, but I find them entertaining.
 
I dislike most gun writers and gun rags out there. Particularly the more modern ones. I find the level of praise for any given product is directly proportional to the amount of advertising said manufacturer purchases in that rag. Really - how often do you see a scorchingly honest review of some piece of turd in a gun rag? The 710 springs to mind. You should watch 'top gear' on BBC to see how a product review type show should be run. It's publicly-funded, so when they review a turd of a car they really rip it good. Honest, and useful.

That's what makes Internet forums like CGN so valuable. Here, a spade is a spade, period.
 
Of the curent writers, i like Seyfried and Barsnes the best.

Interestingly, many of Seyfried's topics I have no rela interest in- relaly old rifles and handguns, double rifles etc etc...But he wrote so well I found it so interesting that I coudlnt' put it down.

I always thought Capsticks stories were some of the best. And I don't care if he wrote them while hunting or sitting in bar...:p
 
My favourite current writers are John Barsness, Ross Seyfried and Rick Jamieson with Barness as my definite favourite. For the writers now in the happy hunting ground I'd say that I'm most fond of Jack O'Connor, Bob Milek and Finn Aagaard. I've found that there's something that comes across in the writing of Barsness and Aagaard that makes me think I'd like them if I ever personally met them. They seem like they'd be great guys to go hunting with.

I met a guy online years ago that knew Capstick quite well. His name was Ralph Nestor and he taught at the university of Alaska Fairanks. We talked guns for a few years before he retired and moved to Minnesota. Anyway we had lunch when he was driving through Whitehorse one year. He was as knowledgable and interesting as Capstick, canned some top notch salmon too. He told me of some great Capstick stories and I guess most of what he wrote was greatly exagerated or written in a bar as you say. You have to admit, his stories are great though. Are you on the CGN forum Ralph?
I agree on Seyfried, he knows how to capture the spirit of where and when the old guns were made and used. The gun is a small part of it, the lore of the times of the old ones is what's interesting to read.

Not really sure who I would like now, but when I was a kid, I loved reading JOC and his stories of the Yukon and Northern BC.

One fellow I really dislike is Jon Sundra, esp when he talks about himself in the third person. Comes across as having too much ego. :rolleyes:
