Favorite Hunt Camp Meal???

Typical BC hunting camps seldom include a cabin or permanent building, are more oftem RV and/or tent camps, meals are usually hearty and simple. Our favourite moose camp supper for many years is classic Cog Au Vin made with grouse, along with mashed potatoes for the gravy. And of course fresh liver and onions is a must - just not for breakfast!

Will always remember the three frying pans each filled with Moose liver, Onions and bacon.
Four guys in a sleeping tent facing the cook tent with a common ridge pole.
A year later did a side of moose ribs over an open fire for about 30 hours (off and on) for five guys.

My favorite meal of all hunts is a plain simple lunch at 8 or 10 thousand feet elev ...a can or two of Sardines and a little fire to make toast to put them on, all while watching a band of ewes & lambs graze among the rocks nearby, after lunch glass the slopes until your eyes get sore and just let them close and rest for couple of hrs....heavenly.

Steak done on a grate over the coals, potatoes wrapped in foil and thrown in the embers, and mushrooms and onions fried over the fire.

That's not just my favourite camp meal, but quite possibly my death row meal as well.

I think my biggest success was Greek ribs and Greek salad with sliced tin foil potatoes and lemon garlic shrimp to
Start. Perch fingers can be subbed for the shrimp.
There's nothing wrong with the classics, but if you can shake things up a bit why not? Easy to do on a barbeque and frying pan too. Remember to do all the cutting with a hunting or fillet knife.

We don't eat any different when hunting then we do when at home. Cooking all done on the fire is the only difference!!!!
Just meat and potato kinda guys.

In our Moose Fishing camp it's fresh fish at least twice a day. We've almost never had a day where we didn't catch enough for 4 or 5 guys in camp.

We've even almost had it where we were sick of fish, but that soon passed...

lol when I'm in hunt camp I'm lucky if I can even cook a couple of snags to eatable conditions.... my health really deteriates when I'm hunting LOL I eat so much junk food and the odd sandwhich, cook a bbq - sausage, chop, steak if I can be bothered early evenings lol

cups of tea..cans of coke an bulk iced coffee milk..

shocker.

Sounds good :)

I'm jealous.

In our moose camp, we have carefully assembled a collection of the worst fishermen in the world, me being their greatest leader to date. We would starve to death, for sure lol.

Can't beat canned beans.
I like the Libbys deep browned.
Fast, no muss, no fuss and the can makes a great target.
Not such a good idea if you're sharing the same tent. ;)

We have 2 meals a day. Mid morning/ noon bacon/sausage ham eggs perogies toast depending on the day, ham leftovers go to camp Mcmuffins. Suppers are beef roast, ham, pork roast, spaghetti, frozen pizza first night but the best night is WING NIGHT! Wings, fresh cut fries, onion rings and jalapeno poppers.

My favourite hunt camp meal is old cheese/crackers on the porch and some smoked oysters later on into the evening with a little cream cheese on a Ritz. Of course a nice steak is great also, but cheese/crackers makes me think of my dad who can no longer hunt with us. He always loved a nice sharp old cheese and a glass of red, all the better sitting on the porch watching the sun go down over the swamp,

One of our camp rules is that each member of the gang is responsible for a nights dinner and the cleanup. Makes for a resort like atmosphere when dinner is served almost every night.
I like making smoked ribs, beans, slaw and biscuits.

Braised pork hocks and pigtails, smothered in onions, Hungarian style!! Fall off the bone goodness!! Soooo good,...it took years before the "old man" caved, and gave me the recipe. I still can't make it like he does though!

Spicy Chorizo and egg soup!! Can put just about anything in it usually garlic, green and white onion, peppers mushrooms, etc. poach the eggs in the broth so they are still soft. Usually the asians make the best chicken broth for this dish. Preserves you well in camp!!
