favorite hunting ammo for 22 lr

Odd, but I have not yet found a hyper-velocity .22 that will give satisfactory accuracy out of any .22 I've owned. Federal blue box out of my Savage Cub, Win Wildcat out of my Norc, Rem subsonic out of my Cooey, and I haven't found the pet load (other than Eley) for my Savage.

Well my favorite would be Mini mags or segmented hollow points from CCI, but I can rarely find them in enough bulk to use for gophers.

Normally I have been using Federal bulk since that's what the 10/22 likes. But now that I have a bolt Savage FV-SR I'll go back to using the win 555 and dynapoints which give me more bang-flops in the field with the bigger hollow points.

For squirrels I am usually using CBs or other quality shorts. Will continue to do so until suppressors are allowed. Not sure why our gov't thinks its mandatory to tick off the neighbours...

Hey Loki610~any photos of your gopher-hunting escapades? :) Did my first gopher shoot in the summer of 2014, most fun I've ever had shooting! HMR for me, zero temptation to bust-out a .22. We kept fairly busy, but not SO busy that it made you think about HMR ammo cost.

As for the OP's question~the only thing I shoot with .22s in Ontario are pigeons when my farmer friends ask me to clear them from their barns. I use CCI "Quiet-22" and that's a 1-shot proposition with good shot placement. Bad shot placement requires one or more follow-ups. Having found some Segmented Quiet-22, I took that last time...wondering if the bullet would even expand/break apart at such low speeds. They seem to be very effective pigeon killers, but cost almost 3x as much. Harder to find too.

I have a few pictures but mostly pretty graphic ones where I was Shooting 100 grain hollowpoints from my .270 and laughing at the spray patterns in the snow!
I tend to use my .22 for the high volume stuff in the spring where I'm trying to wipe them out before they whelp, sometimes I can go through 500 rounds in a hour! After the numbers are cut down and the survivors get smart I use my .17hmr if the weather is calm or my .223 if its breezy. Stopped using my .270win when I got the .223.

I like to you Win 555s with my CZ as they give me small groups at 50 yards and are cheap and easy to find.
Velocitors are my favorite but shoot to a quite different point of aim.
So I have to adjust for that.
It's probably worth it to just shoot the Winchesters as they have more than acceptable hunting accuracy and my rifle will always
be sighted in.
It's quite amazing how different rimfire ammo can change your point of aim.

My 22LR ammo is pretty much all bulk/cheap ammo. I spend my "premium ammo" money on rounds for the HMR.

I like the Winchester Xpert bulk pack.

The larger than average hollow point seems to hit the gophers a bit harder than some other bulk ammos. The impact is audibly more satisfying.

I'm a fan of the CCI Segmented Hollow Points - the high velocity (1640 FPS) variety. They really do a number on gophers, I like to call them my "anti-gopher grenades" - based on their terminal effect.

Problem with them is that shorter barrelled carbine .22s don't like them much, really poor accuracy. They pretty much require longer barrelled rifles. But the rifles that like them, really like them.

Other than that, I stick with CCI mini-mag hollow points.

Yes they certainly tear up gophers. At close range I get multiple exits and instant kills with body shots much like a .17 HMR
I found they fed well in my 10/22 but were very loud with the short barrel so I mostly ended up using them in the Cooey 75.

What kind of accuracy are you getting with those? All the hyper-velocity loads I've tried in any .22 I can think of would give me, at best, 2-3" at 50 yds, whereas standard velocity will give me .25 to 1.25 at that range.

75 yards with my CZ 452 (Leupold VX-1 2-7x scope). Roughly 3/4" group. And that's quite typical, so long as I'm doing my part. Sometimes a bit tighter, sometimes a bit looser, depending on my coffee to blood ratio.

Out of my CIL/Anschutz 125 (much shorter barrel), about 2" at the same distance - it will do 3/4" with mini-mags at 75yards. Out of my 10/22, I'm mostly sure of hitting the backstop at that range with the hyper velocity rounds.
