Favorite or go-to .308 or 30.06 rifle for hunting?

Shortened to 22" barreled stainless T/C Prohunter with Boyd's pepper (black/gray) laminate stocks is my current favorite 30-06.

I have two guys from CGN one wants to sell me a T/C barrel one is 30-06 and the other wants to sell a 308 T/C barrel I'm thinking about getting both of them can't wate to take it out I wanted a T/C encore ever since I was a kid looking at the FurFish&game advertisement

Yes it is with a High Standard chrome lined 22" barrel.........Harold

Hard to go wrong with a good quality commercial M98 Mauser. A step (or 2) above current offerings but not flashy enough for most newbs to appreciate or notice. Not so many people start with a mauser but markedly more people end up there eventually. :)

My favorite .308 rifle for hunting is my iron sigghted, 18.5" barrelled, pistol gripped/collapseable stocked custom M14s. Rugged, reliable and accurate.

Couldn't let sleeping dogs lie....
I settled on a M77 stainless in 308 and a model 70 in 30-06. That covers all of my hunting needs. I won't mention what was in between but this is where I've ended. For now.
Thanks all

Mack

if I decide to hunt with a 308, I would likely take my Micro Medallion or my BLR, there are others to chose from, but these two are my favorites. If I decide to hunt with a 30-06, I only have one, it's a Ruger No.1A, wish it was an AB! I have been hunting with a 7mm-08 for a few years now. Just got a box of HSM Trophy Gold in 257 Roberts 115Grain Berger HPBT Hunting VLD on sale at Cabela's, yesterday, I know I should have bought 2 or 3, but will see how my Micro and BLR like it. If they do, I will likely go a hunting this yr with a Bob! Oh shoot, maybe next yr, I was planning on taking my newly acquired 100/284 this yr! But then again, there should be 2 weeks of hunting, I could alternate, dam these decisions are tough to make!

What I prefer to hunt with is a Sako Forester L579 .308, followed closely by a Sako L61R full stock carbine 30-06. Overall, I prefer the .308 cartridge and short actions vs the longer and less efficient 30-06 so agree with your "instincts".

Of the three rifles you are considering, Model 70 Tikka t3 and Rem m700 in that order. I wouldn't buy a new Remington, I have had way too many disappointments with Remington quality in recent years.

No 308's in my safe have two 30-06 now made in 1950's featherweight Husqvarna and a shortened to 22" barreled T/C Prohunter.

Have had Ruger and Rem 700 30-06 rifles over the years as well.

As to modern rifles I am seeing some very good results with the Tikka's.

agreed! Now watch the fireworks start!;)

As Ed Matunas once wrote, gun for gun, the 308 will out shoot the 30-06!

I'd take a .308 over a 30-06 .... ANYDAY.

Of your 3 listed I'd probably go with the Tikka but do not like that it's a long action for a .308. I'd also consider a Remington Model 7 for .308.

I use a Handi-Rifle but they don't make them anymore so if you haven't the patience to wait for the used market I guess you could settle for Tikka T3, Rem 700 or Winchester Model 70.

My go to .308 is a Winchester Model 88 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7 X 32 on it.

A very handy little rig.

Dad? Is that you? When did you join CGN? Laugh2

I don't own a .308 right now but my go to 30-06 is a CZ ZG-47. If you like Mausers, you'll like this gun.

If I hadn't of stumbled across that rifle, a Model 70 Featherweight or a Ruger M77 in .308 would have ended up following me home one day. If one follows you home OP, you'll more than likely be a happy guy.
