Hey all, just bought a new Remington 870 Deer/Turkey combo the other day with a Bushnell Redot and the setup is great! I bought it from Shooters Choice here in Kitchener/Waterloo. I picked up some Federals, Winchester and Remington sabots to try out.

Sighted in the Federals first, first two shots were at 50 yards to adjust scope and then out to 100 to site in (had them hitting just over 2" high at 100 which was close for 150/bullseye) Anyway, the last three shots of the Federals at 100 where pretty good with about a 5" group (I blame that more on the 0-power scope and aiming at a dot 1" in diameter!)

I then moved to the Winchesters...right off the bat I noticed a big change. The kick felt like double and they were hitting 12" higher than the Federals and didn't like the grouping at all (5 shots and 12" groups with the lowest 12" above the bullseye!)

I then pulled out the Remington Ultra-Bonded slugs and the first one hit 1" higher than the federals! I moved the dote down 1" and fired the last 4 shots...4" group and the kick was really nice!


So what is everyone else shooting in there riffled slug barrels? I am pretty happy with these Remingtons and now I just have to go buy a few boxes for the hunt...Great...more money!

Sabots

3 of us running Fed. barnes Expanders,love them.The Win.nobody can make them hit the barn door from inside..............
 
Interesting guys...I use an Ithaca M37 Featherlight in 20 gauge, using an M87 20 inch fully rifled barrel. Personally I found my M37 really printed the Winchester Supreme Gold and Supreme Platinums very well. The Golds were a little higher especially at 75 yards, but were directly above the Platniums.

Slugs holes almost touching at 35 yards, and two inch group at 75 yards.....
Lyman "Sabot" slugs, the air pellet like design, were almost as good at 35 yards and I have yet to try them at longer ranges.
 
remember to clean that barrel good though when your shooting it. Plastic will build up inside causing your POI to go crazy..

Going up to to sight in my 270 and 870 tomorrow..using Partition Golds and 3in Barnes Expanders
 
Fav sabots.

I have a Norinco 870 knock off with a rifled barrel. I've had it for two seasons and have had the good fortune to shoot a buck each year with it. It is a great gun, and I have been pleasantly supprised with the quality. When I first bought it I tried every sabot I could get my hands on at the range to sight it in, and get a feel for the gun.

My experience... in order of preference..

1. Remington 3" copper solids - both bucks taken with these and I was able to recover the bullet from last year's buck. It looks exactly what they advertise re: expansion.
2. 2\3" copper solids
3. Lightfield 2\3" hybrids
4. Winchester Platinum 2\3" @ 1700fps
5. Federal - I have not had any luck with any of Federal's sabots...

For my $$ Remington hands down is the best !!! I bought some of the new 2/3" ultra sabots to try this year, so we'll see if I can go 3 for 3...

In the end I think the best thing to do is buy a bunch of different brands and try them out (as you've seemed to have done). It's a little expensive, but well worth finding out what kind of sabots your gun likes. Better to find that out before you head into the field!!!!!!!!!!!

Update- Well I after blowing a box of each into the air and figuring out which one I liked (the Remington Ultra Bonded Core-loct's) I went back to Shooters Choice and bought 4 more boxes (not cheap!) anyway, I planned on shooting off 2 boxes and saving 2 for the hunt next week!

First shot was at 50yards and just wanted to dial in...2.5" high, lowered it down to 1.5" high and dead on other than that. Moved back to 100 and took 3 shots...2.5" high (average) and a 3" group...pretty good for a 0-power redot. Put up a new target and did 2 shots standing...shots were in a 5" group with the bulls-eye almost in the center...not bad I thought. 3 shots left...I moved back to 150 which acrording to the Remington box should be dead on...2 shots with the smallest dot size in the scope and I hit the bull on the 1st shot and 1" high on the second...WOW..could never have dreamed of that with a normal barrel and riffled slugs!

So, I have one shot left...my brother who was with me said lets move back to 200...thinking he was nuts but the remington box gave me #'s for drops at that distance also. We moved back, set up the bench, aimed about 8" high (the box said -6.7" at 200) but from this distance I could hardly see my orange 2" bull...so we went back to the target and made a 4-5" circle out of other stickers. At 200 I could see it clearly. Set-up, set the dot at 8" high and squezed the trigger. Shot felt good but wasn't sure. Walked up to the target...height was 2" low of center and 6" to the right(there was a mild west wind that I didn't acount for).

Over all I am just amazed at how this thing fires..I was cleaning the barrel every 2 shots and I am sure that helped. I don't plan on going beyond 100yard but I do feel comfortable at 150 if conditions are right! I will leave 200yards for ground hog shooting in the summer!!!!!

Anyway, thanks for the help guys and I got a lot of info from doing searches!

nice going! I was all over the page ...gunsmith boredsighted the gun only to have it shoot 8in low and 5inches left...got it to shoot 2in high at 50 and at 100 shots were not good using the barnes expanders....I may have to try the copper solids and the core locts again...cleaning after 5 shots with Remington Bore Cleaner....maybe some wipe out of CVA sabot solvent is in order next time at BPS

I just put on a 1x28 Bushnell Red-Dot. I really like it so far but seeing now what it can shoot I think I might jump up to a 3-6 power or something along those lines or even a lower but still able to see the target at 150-200 yards. That won't be till the sping though!

Update- Doe down!

Well, the gun/sabots showed there true power last night. Just before dark a nice do walked out of a trail into the feild I was sitting in at what I figured was 150 yards away... Rested the shotgun on the stand rest, zero'd the dot on its chest and squezed the trigger....one good jump in the are and she didn't make it more than 20 feet and she was down. Ran up right away and perfect hit (front quarting) shot entered and took out the lungs, nicked the heart! It was then I turned around to where all my gear was and stand thinking...thats pretty far away! paced it off...167yards!!!!

First deer with the 870 was perfect and I feel comfortable at this distance although I would never attempt a running shot from that far away!

Thanks for all the info and help on chosing the right shotgun and slugs...
