Hello everyone,

I am looking at picking up my first vortex scope primary used for hunting and am curious what your favorites are.

My initial thoughts were to get something middle tier like the viper hs, but I am wondering how it compares to the diamondback or venom/razor lines.

Also will there be a significant difference in brightness going from a 44mm to 50?

Thanks!

Viper HS is a good scope, I dont think you would be disappointed in it. The diamond back scopes punch above their weight when compared to others at a higher cost, it will be a little heavier than the Viper. The venom you mention is almost 2x the weight of the Viper and is good for target shooting or pounding nails.

Viper HS is a good all around scope, mine on a Mark V in .300 Weatherby and rock solid.

I have a couple of Strike Eagles too on target rifles. Also decent for that purpose, but they are "kilometer" guns, not "mile" guns.

Razors are really where it's at though. If you can afford to swing it they are great.

Diamondback would be a bare minimum. Viper if you can swing it. Razor is as good as anything out there in my opinion. Self proclaimed vortex fan boy here though so take it for what you will.

I've owned every Vortex made. I even had one of the first 100 Crossfire scopes the came into Canada right up until a house fire melted it (I'm probably the only person who Vortex warranty turned down :p )

My all time favorite for what you got vs the price point was the Strike Eagle. Both the 3-18 and the 5-25 were great optics for that $1000 mark. You also can't beat the "we warranty stupid" part of their line. No one else that I know of in optics will cover you dropping your scope or over tightening your rings by sending you a brand new replacement.

I subscribe to the mentality of buying the best optics one can afford... and then concern oneself about the firearm it goes on.
There is no set equation but I'd rather than high quality glass on an inexpensive rifle than an expensive rifle with cheap glass.

Diamondback tactical are excellent scopes and reasonable priced. The 3-9x40 often sells for $249 from Alflaherty with free shipping. I don't think you can beat this scope at that price point. Read the reviews on opticsplanet. The Strike Eagle has more features and adjustments but overpriced in Canada.
