I have a 308 norma mag, and I was wondering what a good load for 180 speer SP is, I guess what I really need is a good powder, and a good load. I have H-4831 and was wondering if that would be suitable. Any help with this would be appreciated

With the bullets you're using, I checked the Speer # 13 manual and I see they don't have a listing for H-4831. In other manuals, however, H-4831 is listed in loads for 180gr bullets, the Sierra Edition V for example. The charges they list are from 70.1grs to 77.0grs. I've never used that powder but in my308 Norma Mag the load I use is the Sierra 200gr SBT and a powder that really has worked well for me is IMR 4350, 69grs. This is a load listed in the older Sierra 2nd edition manual. The load in the Edition V is a little lower, 67.5grs. I also extend the bullet out a little more than the C.O.A.L. listed in the manual to minimixe freebore. They list the C.O.A.L. using the 200gr SBT @ 3.250" and I'm at 3.355".

I use 75grs Norma MRP with a yellow tipped Norma 180gr bullet (I can't remember the name/#).

I spent so much time trying to find an accurate load for my 308 Norma that it started to drive me crazy...

I finally pulled a factory round apart and copied the load. This was one of the only times I could do this because Norma listed their components.

I ended up shrinking my groups to under 3/4" after this...

The first .308 Norma Mag I had was a Parker Hale. The reason the guy sold it to me was he had just acquired a Schultz & Larsen in .308 Norma Mag. When I saw it I promised myself, one day I'd get a Schultz. Well, a few years ago I did and along with it, a quantity of brass, a Norma Ballistics Tables Loading Data chart and two small Norma manuals, The Norma Gunbug's Guide and Norma Ballistics Table.
I did a fair amount of bullet & load testing and a combination that delivered pretty good accuracy, as I recall 1.25", was Sierra 180gr SBT's and IMR 4350, but I always thought it should do a little better. The guy I bought the gun from approached me saying he'd found another box of brass his Dad had reloaded, half empty & half loaded. My first group of five, I was dazzled and amazed after repeating the group size with the second five!! 3/4"! As luck would have it, his Dad had documented the load in the back of The Norma Gunbug's Guide manual under my favorite loads and had also written it on the inside of a box of brass. The two main components were the 180gr Norma dual-core(dimpled) bullet and Norma 204 powder. Contacting Norma in Sweden, those compontnts are no longer available.
Anyway, back to the present, the closest I've come to duplicating those results has been with Sierra 200gr SBT's and IMR 4350.

thanks

thankyou for the reloading help, I think I will try my 180 speer SP and continue with H-4831, I have used the hornady 180 bullets with the H-4831 up till now and found they didn't perform thats why I switched to speer, I will play with this.

I Have owned several 308 Norma Mags over the years, and never had one that failed to perform with the 180 Partition and 74/75 grains of Norma MRP (Norma 205 was the predecessor, and was equally good at the same charge level) I now have a Custom 30-338, basically the ballistic twin to the 308 Norma. Guess what I'm shooting in it? 180 Partition and 74.5 grains of Norma MRP. I have taken several Elk and Moose with it, some at rather extended ranges, and never needed a second shot yet. BTW, This load 'graphs 3125 avg for 5 shots and will shoot ½moa if I do my part. FWIW, The 200 Partition with 72.5 grains of MRP makes 2990 and shoots just as well as the 180. I have nothing but admiration for the 308 Norma/30-338 and will probably have this one till I die. Regards, Eagleye

I have a norma as well I have found a good load with 180 partitions and 70.5 grains of IMR 4350 it shoots around 7/8 - 1 inch whcih is decent enough for hunting. I would love to either build a new one or pick up a shultz as well.
They're great guns, I will keep mine around forever
