I have a 308 norma mag, and I was wondering what a good load for 180 speer SP is, I guess what I really need is a good powder, and a good load. I have H-4831 and was wondering if that would be suitable. Any help with this would be appreciated
With the bullets you're using, I checked the Speer # 13 manual and I see they don't have a listing for H-4831. In other manuals, however, H-4831 is listed in loads for 180gr bullets, the Sierra Edition V for example. The charges they list are from 70.1grs to 77.0grs. I've never used that powder but in my308 Norma Mag the load I use is the Sierra 200gr SBT and a powder that really has worked well for me is IMR 4350, 69grs. This is a load listed in the older Sierra 2nd edition manual. The load in the Edition V is a little lower, 67.5grs. I also extend the bullet out a little more than the C.O.A.L. listed in the manual to minimixe freebore. They list the C.O.A.L. using the 200gr SBT @ 3.250" and I'm at 3.355".I have a 308 norma mag, and I was wondering what a good load for 180 speer SP is, I guess what I really need is a good powder, and a good load. The first .308 Norma Mag I had was a Parker Hale. The reason the guy sold it to me was he had just acquired a Schultz & Larsen in .308 Norma Mag. When I saw it I promised myself, one day I'd get a Schultz. Well, a few years ago I did and along with it, a quantity of brass, a Norma Ballistics Tables Loading Data chart and two small Norma manuals, The Norma Gunbug's Guide and Norma Ballistics Table.I use 75grs Norma MRP with a yellow tipped Norma 180gr bullet (I can't remember the name/#).
I spent so much time trying to find an accurate load for my 308 Norma that it started to drive me crazy...
I finally pulled a factory round apart and copied the load. This was one of the only times I could do this because Norma listed their components.
I ended up shrinking my groups to under 3/4" after this...
