Hey everyone,

I'm looking to change to front sight (eventually) on my Savage 99 and was looking for some opinions. I'm leaning heavily towards a brass sight and was also thinking about going to a post instead of a bead. This is going to be a ~100 yard (my personal limitation with a peep) deer gun.

Anyone have a favourite they can recommend?

This is what I have now

There's nothing wrong with what I have now...I just want to try something different. If it doesn't work, I can always go back.

100-yard deer rifle in the Atikokan area? A Williams FireSight fibre-optic. They work great; I had one on my .30-30 AI.

And as you said, the one you have is fine too.

I have the firesight on my two lever actions, and would not have anything else after using them.

Easy to see, even in poorer light conditions.
If you pair them with an aperture rear sight, you have the greatest combo, IMHO.

I like a rectangular front post when combined with a rear aperture. The flat top provides an index of elevation unmatched by bead type sights, and the human eye finds the center very quickly, so the post is not unlike a cross hair, with both a horizontal and a vertical wire. If the post is brass or brass faced, so much the better as brass appears white against a dark background and black against white. I also like barrel band front sights for their strength and classic styling, both the NECG and the scalloped version of the Ruger barrel band are pleasing to my eye.

I have a brass Skinner post on my 99F with a Williams peep sight. I really like it, good visibilty and quick to get on target. Skinner sights are great people to deal with. I bought 2 of them at first to use on my 94 BB in 356. I wasn't sure of the height needed so I ordered taller than needed and filed it down to suit my needs. I didn't mess up and had a spare so I thought what the heck and installed the other on my 99.

Good to hear! I might go in that direction.
