favourite hunting bullet for 300 wm

I had good results with a new to me rifle, plain Jane corelock 180's in factory ammo while I build up my brass to load. Add 100 or more f/sec might push the bullet beyond optimum. Personal favorite in everything I shoot has always been the partition, pricey, but ammo is on of the cheaper parts of a hunting trip.
 
Well I don't know if new partitions are any different than old ones but I couldn't do any better than 1.8" for 3 shot group at 100 meters
Re loader 19 started at 68 grs and went up each grain to 75
Imr 4831 from 69 gr to 74
H1000 76 gr to 80 gr


H1000 wouldn't get anything accurate in my 25/06 either

A box of Hornady sst and woodlieghs arrived today so I'll repeat again with each. I'll order some accubonds after Xmas rush
I'd still like to try the 220 gr round nose with the h1000 at around 2400-2500 fps. I don't think they'll come apart. I'll try them in various materials before ill try them on game.
 
BB........you might try the Partition 220 semi RN, they are supposed to shoot well and you should be able to get an easy 2800 out of them. No worries about them coming apart........Doubt you'll ever recover one though........I suspect they will go brisket to butt hole through anything NA has to offer.
Like I said I had the best results both accuracy and velocity wise with IMR 7828 in 3 or 4 different 300 WM.........I have also found the best accuracy at red line in all 300s I have loaded for, unfortunately some of the very best groups shot, the brass would no longer hold a primer after one load......You might see a significant tightening of groups if you keep going up and watching for pressure signs........RL19 and IMR 4831 I consider too fast for 180gn + bullets in the 300 but you may wish to put some more H1000 and see how it does. Another trick is to put some electrical tape in a pad at the forend tip and try to apply 5-10 lbs upward pressure on your barrel. This has worked at least 80% of the time for me in tightening groups with a sporter weight barrel.

Good to know. It's free floated but has a ####ty factory stock. It groups right around an inch for 5 shot group with Winchester Grey box 180 gr. I needed brass so I bought factory ammo. I have some ppc prvi brass coming from a site sponsor so ill play with that as well. I'll keep trying other bullets and buy more powders. I was just using what I had on hand
 
Today I loaded from 69 grs to 74 grs of imr 4831 with the Hornady sst. I found some good results with 71 gr and great results with 72 gr. That averaged 2926 fps which is slower than I had hoped for but 10 rounds and only 7 fps difference between all recorded speeds and groups were less than half inch.
73 grs opened up to 1.25" but SD was 95 fps and 73.6 grs was an amazing 4" triangular group. I thought my scope had come loose. Everything was still tight so I fired the 74 gr grouping which went 2" vertical spread. Maybe more powder would bring it back to a tighter group. Primers were still rounded at the edges with no signs of pressure. 74 grs average was 3044 fps.
This was in 30`F with little to no wind prone off a bipod.
Can't wait to do it all over again with the woodlieghs. However I think I'll drop to 5 shot groups not 10. 70 rounds just takes to long letting the barrel cool
I've had good results in my testing of the sst in other calibers and with all but 3 charges going less than moa they sure fly good
 
Back in 1969, I had saved up enough money to buy a Winchester Model 70 in 300 WinMag with a Redfield 3X9 Wide Angle scope from an Edmonton pawnshop. I bought a box of 150gn PowerPoint Soft Point ammo and zeroed it at approx 100 yards with about 10 shots. In the ten years that followed, I bagged two female moose, one 4 Pt Mulie, two Whitetail bucks and my son dropped a trophy Antelope. All animals were shot at less than 150 yards and all dropped in their tracks. I also won a $20 bet by hitting a cigarette pack at 100 yds from a hunting buddy. Unfortunately, in a moment of making rent or being kicked into the snow with wife and kid, sold the outfit for $300. Found the original box of shells when cleaning out my hunting gear the other day. One live cartridge still left of the original twenty. I now reload my 30-06 with 178 Eld-X bullets but wonder if the old 30 Cal Soft Points aren't still the answer for shots less than 200 yards!
