We have all done it. What's your favorite centerfire for grouse and please give the full story with results. I'll start.

My brother and I were out deer hunting. I had my trusty 260 Rem and he his 30-06. Iknew my 260 was accurate. Saw a grouse on the road and said, "watch this". Shot its head clean off, no other damage. My brother said, "okay, next one's mine". So, sure enough, there was a grouse and off barked his '06. He missed but scared the bird into a tree. He walks underneath...you guessed it. Feathers everywhere. He says, "I missed".

*Flame on*
Let me get this straight... your friend shot his 30-06 up in the air, pointing at a grouse in a tree?
Do you have any idea how dangerous this is?! ie. When you miss the grouse, WHERE IS THE BULLET GOING??
Hopefully not into my chest, when it comes down, if I'm walking in the woods a mile downrange from your friend. Guess he missed the *safety* part of the firearms safety course.

In the tree? Strongly agreed with ^. That was stupid and reckless. On the ground, in the field - whatever I happen to be carrying while I'm hunting moose or whatever. 7mm's not overkill if you hit em in the head

Reading that statement, myself and apparently many others are thinking that a second shot was fired that caused the feathers to be everywhere. After all,it was stated that the first shot was a miss.

I was just going to post the same thing. Some of you guys need to take the time and read the full post

I did read the entire post.It does not specifically say that a second shot was fired after the bird was in the tree.I does however say that the first shot was a miss, and that after the guy walked under the tree that the bird flew into, there were feathers everywhere. If no more shots were fired, how did the feathers get to be everywhere under the tree,if the only shot fired was a miss while the bird was on the ground?

I've used .303, 30-06, 7RM, 338 WM, .270, 45ACP, 30-30.....

Effective if you hit them in the head.

When goruse charge, you need to make fast CNS hits with apremium bullet. Last grouse charge I was faced with I used a 300WSM with 180gr Nosler Partitions, and made 3 consecutive head shots at close range.

Suffice to say, I was not undergunned......;)

Only one I was ever proud of afterwards was with an open sighted .303, shot one with a .300 mag and another with a .280, both times were same result, low bullet and damaged goods.

30-06 loaded with 125 gr lead GC bullets and 14 gr of Unique. Shoots to point of aim at 20 yards. Nice little clover leafs on paper. Nice little head shot grouse. Next to no report, and no recoil. Good for rabbits too. Head shots only though, cause that bullet comes out the tube at 1980 fps. :)

To be honest,if any of our group was to fire at a grouse with his rifle while on one or our hunts for big game,it would be his last day hunting with our group. We don't consider a grouse or two worth the chance of spooking a big game animal.

Same with us while we're moose hunting. But once our moose is down, we switch to grouse hunting. The odd time I'll use inserts that lets me shoot 32 ACP in .308 or .300WM.
