I just could not resist buying this barrel from the nice vendors at TNA is Mississauga here on CGNutz. Shipping was spooky fast and I just could not resist the temptation to build another Super Match rig but this time I’m gonna shoot it for myself (yeah , right)....

The Faxon barrel comes with a Nitride Finish both inside and outside surfaces. Kinda looks like a very deep black coloured bluing job. It did NOT come with a Heavy NM Op rod guide so I had to source one from Mr McKee at Fulton Armory. You are on your own to source one for yourself. I’m not certain if you purchased a Krieger Heavy NM barrel from board sponsored dealers like Nordic Marksman and Hirsch Precision, an accompanying NM Op rod guide will be included. Remember the Heavy NM barrels need their OWN proprietary NM Op rod Guides. Be warned!!

The stock is the Boyd’s, made for Springfield Armoury folks and it’s a pretty beefy profile. Since it’s oil finished, I will need to strip this factory finish entirely before I glass bed this baby. Time to either build and Heavy Match stock that’s super stiff and / or buy an M1A McMillan stock from Glendale, Arizona and have a local importer work their import process magic...

How’s she shoot? Well I did the fire one shot and clean with copper solvent for the first ten rounds. Then I fired three rounds and cleaned for the next fifteen rounds. Yup that’s the usual break in process. Force of Habit, I guess!

Then I shot a group...

Have a look at the ten shot group I shot today. I used an ARMS 18 scope mount and a Bushnell 10 x 40 mm Mildot scope. I would have loved to use one of my HDMR2 H59 Reticle Bushnell scopes but it’s mounted on my Accuracy International 308 rig. And there she will stay.

My interpretation and it’s only my take....

Tons of shooting potential since I’m using a wood stock subject to wood compression as wood is prone to do. I’m a glass stock guy and a competition shooter so stiff glass stocks for me... hey your rig is your own rig. What works for you ain’t necessarily gonna work for others here on CGNutz....

Couple of flyers up on the left, the cell phone camera is turned over, since my bench technique always sucked over the years. This rig HAS to get glass bedded into a super stiff stock. That’s just my bias!!

Anyways. I’m pleased with how this Super Match build is coming along. It’s a pleasure to shoot. Now I need to consider a shooting jacket. Back to the Future, Marty!!

Faxon barrels have had a super established reputation for building machine gun barrels for the US Military as well as AR15 “Gunny” barrels. I believe CTCS a board sponsor has Faxon AR15 barrels for sale and lots of them. Or one can google search and head to the Faxon site and read about their barrel building practices. Now they are venturing into the M14 world. This may be a challenge to the Krieger Barrel M14 empire. More M14 barrels for us, what’s not to like??

More on this adventure in the coming months!!

Cheers, Barney

For the curious among you all, the trigger group is USGI and ONLY greased up for a smooth take up. I don’t lighten triggers since I’m ignorant and will remain that way for a good reason. The gas system is an M1A unitized baby from Brownells in USA. It comes welded and the front band tabs are BENT Up to ensure a super non-rattling handguard fit.

The rear sight is a USGI single MOA per klick assembly.

I cut my chamber with my Clymer Pull Through reamer and the chamber is as tight as I could physically make it. My thirty year old RCBS Precision Mic reports a 3 thou chamber from the 1.630” SAAMI GO gauge

Front sight is a SAI contract made NM 0.062” blade that needs 16 klicks from absolute bottom which the USGI manual recommends 10 to 15 klicks. But I’ve got some filing down to do. Actually I might leave that from sight alone since the ARMS 18 scope rail does not interfere with iron sight use. Life is Good!!

The entire barreled receiver when slapped vibrates like a tuning fork. That reminds me that “tight is right” and without rattle. Now I need to have that flash suppressor unit “pinging” like a tuning fork sound!

More to follow later on!!

Cheers, Barney

Thanks for the post TacticalTeacher ! Had no idea Faxon made M14 barrels.

Now you got me thinkin' .....

I just received a couple of PMs regarding the quality of their barrel building process. I’m not a barrel builder nor an engineer or gunsmith, but a competition marksman so I’ve cut and pasted this description from the Faxon Firearms dot com website:

Building on our success with AR-15 Barrels, 1911s, and M240 machine guns, Faxon is proud to offer its latest barrels for a new platform, the M1A. The Super Match barrel follows the match-winning profile with heavy weight to the rear and a balanced profile up front. Hand-polished .308 Winchester chambers* match to 1/10 twist rifling to create a barrel designed for the heaviest target loads. Coating is black oxide to allow one to break-in a barrel for maximum accuracy.

Simply put, we would not call these "Super Match" if they could not live up to the name.

Barrel Material: 4150 GBQ Steel
Barrel Type: Button Rifled
Barrel Caliber: .308 WIN
Barrel Twist: 1:10
Barrel Length: 22”
Barrel Profile: Heavy Super Match
Barrel Gas System: M1A
Inside Finish: Black Oxide
Outside Finish: Black Oxide
Muzzle Thread: M1A Standard
Barrel Compatibility: All M1A / M14 Rifles (Threads are all timed)
Weight: 3.30 Lbs
Magnetic Particle Inspected!
11-degree Target Crown

Installers should note the following for installation.

Barrels are machined with timed threads. They are ready to be torqued to the receiver and will have the gas port, alignment cuts, etc. all match.
Barrels are short-chambered. They will require reaming to match with your bolt and receiver.
The Super Match M1A barrels require a heavy op rod guide.

Faxon Firearms barrels are the pinnacle of value. Manufactured 100% in-house from cradle-to-grave, these barrels are fully stress relieved, air-gauge tested, and 11 degree target crowned to ensure superior accuracy.

Quality is imbued into our barrels from the start. We start with the best materials, either certified 4150 Mil-Spec steel or 416-R Stainless. From there, each barrel goes through a battery of tests at each operation until finished and final inspected. All barrels are individually checked for headspace by precision custom hardened gauges.

There. Now you are brought up to speed. Hey maybe I should get True North Arms to bring in a few of these barrels. Hey Jerry T or Mystic Player, If you are reading this, there could be some future potential here. Wink wink nudge nudge!

Oh BTW, I cannot help but thank John or M14Medic who lent a hand with this build. He is a busy guy but he knows his stuff! This forum is full of talented experts who I am proud to know! Thanks for all your help since 2003? Darn it’s been a great run here on CGNutz!

What's the ballpark cost for the barrel and getting it installed?

Expect to pay about $500. Hirsch Precision sells Krieger Heavy NM barrels for around $529 when they have them in stock. Mystic Precision is also a Krieger dealer as he can order their importation into Canada! Also head over to Nordic Marksman’s site since they have Krieger barrels on their site.

Expect the work to install and cut your chamber to cost around $300 plus mailing back and forth to your location.

Does that sound like a normal barrel install from a gunsmith? It’s pretty close anyways. There are many, many talented and skilled smiths in Canada who can do this kind of work.

There does that help? Sometimes buying a Super Match at around $3000 sounds easier.

thanks for the heads-up Barney. good to see more M14 quality barrels available north of the border. we need them as the old ones wear out, and supply here is scarce. keep us informed as you go down the rabbit hole of persuing the sub MOA m14. you know you want one.

Nice to see another heavy barrel option but bummer they don't supply a proprietory oprod guide. Faxon doesn't make one to go with thier barrel?

gonna keep this one for a while Barney? and competitions planned with it?

Yes Faxon does not provide any op rod guides with their barrel. Both Krieger and Smith Enterprises make the heavy barrel op rod guides.

As you may know the Garrison Petawawa Range Control Standing Orders specify the caliber restrictions limit what we shoot to : 223, 308, 303, 338 LM So this M1A is great for shooting the PR Matches especially since Bravo Range is 600m long. It’s all good. We gotta work with what we have.

Now to scope this Hvy barreled rig permanently. Just a matter of time. I’m enjoying this build for a change, it’s mine so I am taking my sweet time. I was also thinking about shooting Ryan-Mcle’s Steel shoots at Garrison Petawawa with this rig , too. Should be a ton of fun

Cheers, Barney
