Earlier today FedBizOpps.gov announced a contract award for the FBI solicitation for new 9mm service and training weapons. In the solicitation the FBI required (1) compact framed pistol, (1) full size pistol, (1) Man-Marker (Simunition) pistol, and (1) Inert training pistol. While many thought Sig Sauer had this one all but in the bag with their popular and highly modular P320, the award went to Glock.
While the FBI is the agency that submitted the original solicitation, it probably won’t be the only agency that adopts the new pistol. Other government entities that may purchase pistols and parts under this contract include:
United States Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security
United States Marshals Service
Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms
United States Postal Service
United States Treasury Department
Drug Enforcement Agency
United States Capitol Police
United States Park Police
United States Department of Energy
Office of Inspector General (all Federal agencies)
United States Department of Defense
As to exactly what model(s) were awarded, we can tell you this: It isn’t something currently commercially available. One of the bigger clues about this was the requirement “Finger grooves on the frame are not permitted“, which counts out a standard Generation 4 Glock. We will have further details for you tomorrow regarding other changes.

The generation in question is apparently dubbed the Glock 17M and Glock 19M. Bets are that the M stands for modular. This was posted on the US forums about two weeks ago.

FBI 3 purchasing factors

Cost: lots of hands to fill
Simplicity: lots of dumbasses out there that run a computer but still need a gun
Look: this is the FBI the clean cut image comes into play here.

To all the Glock haters out there...

Glock is King!

More like Glock is the cheapest company that met all the criteria for selection. Maybe they were 5$ cheaper than the next in line. Maybe the next in line was hand fitted and garanteed 1 inch at 25 yards, but it wasn't in the selection criteria. Still think the Glock is king?

Fixed it for ya... After all, never forget your weapon is made by the lowest bidder.

I hope all the Beretta fan boys realize the same thing about their guns too. Glock is still the champ, the number one selling handgun on the planet, people can smack talk as much as they want about them but the Glock is an amazing sidearm.

is there any branch of the US that isnt going to Glock?
while i dont follow this topic very closely i do recall the military.... maybe the navy(?) was going G19 or something like that.
now with this.... sure seems like they are going balls in down there.

they are a reliable cheap gun so i can totally understand the allure.
while i have one and i admit its not my favorite to shoot i do respect its simplicity and shoot-ability coupled with reliability.

Glock, the gun id love to love.

Surprised at this; the FBI, like the RCMP, have been in the back pocket of Smith & Wesson for decades.

Have they? Their current issue is the Glock 22/23.

Glock was probably an easier sell to the FBI given their currently issued sidearm. They have all the periphery equipment, holsters, etc. for them already.

Nothing particularly bad about Glock, or Sig, or probably any of the other candidates. The fact that familiarity, parts stocks and relationships with Glock LE people already existed will have played onto the equation. Particularly the last, it's amazing how much a good supplier relationship is worth.
