"Firearms manufacturer unveils futuristic smart rifle for Canadian armed forces"

Firearm manufacturer Colt Canada is working on a smart rifle that would reduce the burden on Canadian soldiers. The rifle is being equipped with a smart-targeting system that could automatically engage targets.

Colt Canada is developing a smart rifle for the Defense Research and Development Canada. The rifle can fire 5.56 ammo and it has a targeting system that can automatically engage targets.
Canada's latest gun design seem to have been inspired by a "Halo" video game.

Colt Canada, a firearm manufacturer owned by the U.S., recently released a video demonstrating its new prototype gun for the Canadian military.

The Next Generation Bullpup Prototype rifle was made for Defense Research and Development Canada, and has been under development since 2009. The purpose of the gun design is to give Canadian military a lighter, better weapon than the Colt C7 rifle Canada currently uses.

The bullpup rifle — which feeds the magazine into the gun behind the trigger rather than in front — will be a short rifle with a firing mechanism to shoot lightweight cased telescoped ammunition. The rifle will also have the capability to carry either a three-round, 40-mm grenade launcher, or a 12-gauge shotgun.

"In the medium term, this weapon concept represents a lethal, flexible general-purpose platform," said Lt.-Col. Serge Lapointe of the Soldier Systems (DLR 5) of the Canadian Army in a statement. "It will be able to operate in all theatres of operations in the most complex terrain including urban areas, mountains, jungles, deserts and the Arctic."

Colt Canada is also planning to further develop the gun with smart technology. Future designs include a smart-targeting system, like the ones the U.S. Army is testing in its auto-aiming rifles.

There's no set date as to when the Canadian military wants to implement the new rifles, but in the meantime developers will collect data to improve the gun.
