Feathering in wood stock

Stain is going to hide grain, not bring it out... personally I would just finish the bare natural wood and appreciate what Mother Nature gave you... 👍

Depending on the wood. A really light wood like maple can often benefit from a stain.
A light touch with a torch or paint brush and stain can create the stripes on really plain wood but it usually looks phony or ugly.

Yes to the above comments that is fiddle back not feathering . Stocks that have both feathered crotch and fiddle back are gorgeous but expensive

Thanks! That's what holds on the fore Tip!

Nice piece of wood, I'd cut the ugly part off of the fore end and add a contrasting piece before finishing.

That stock has a lot of potential. Feathering is also referred to as chatoyancy... Hoytcannon has it right. Many many thin layers will make that stock pop.

Chatoyancy and feathered? I've heard of fiddleback and feather crotch for wood gun stocks, however not these two descriptions.....guess I've learned something new.

If the forend tip was installed right there should be a small wooden dow that is drilled into the stock + tip and held together with good quality wood glue .
You will have to cut it off with fine tooth wood saw .

To bring out the tiger stripe / curl , degrease it well and treat with aqua fortis . Muzzle loading shops have it for stocks .It is a pretty easy treatment and will pop the curly grain. Google will show you lots of examples, and directions. After treating it , neutralize and finish with tru oil , at least 8 to 10 coats.

I used to make custom cabinets etc and when I had a feathered grain all I did was wipe with circa 1850 then graduate sanding with grits starting at 800, 1000 then finally 1200 all done with water sanding. Especially when working with oak, black walnut, cherry and maple. Worst wood to work with was any quarter saw because of more grain to deal with. Good luck.

Aqua fortis is for maple or light couloured woods only i thought? Pretty sure it will turn walnut black.
