Features unique to 870 police ?

The police magnums still retain the old style detent ball and socket style magazine cap. They also have a stronger magazine spring. Trigger return springs and trigger pulls are also heavier. There are no J locs on police models.

I think you are referring to the dimples in the mag tube...with a police magnum you can easily attach a mag tube extension without dealing with those wretched dimples...that alone is worth the price of admission.
 
J lock ? That thingy on the left side that you have to push in to open the action on an empty chamber ? (I know f-all about shotguns, just doing my research so please bare with me ...)
 
I believe you are referring to the the action bar lock.The J-lock is located at the rear of the trigger guard on the left side near the safety.Remington puts them on most of their guns now.They supply you with a green handled "key" with which you insert and lock or unlock your gun.I suppose it represents some sort of trigger lock???

No that's the action release.

The J-lock refers to a safety system introduced by Remington around 2000. Previously Remington shotguns had a simple cross-bolt safety at the rear of the trigger guard. The J-lock is a mechanism that permits the cross-bolt safety to be locked on safe and only unlocked with a key. There have been reports that the J-lock can engage without using the key which may explain why it's not on the Police Model.

There are some other differences between the Police and Express Models that haven't been covered. The Police uses bar stock for the small parts while the Expressed uses MIM. Secondly the Police model is parkerized while the Express has a less durable finish.

When I compared a Police model and an Express side by side there was no doubt in my mind that the Police was worth the extra money.

Interesting, how about the Wingmaster ?
 
My police service still has some old Wingmasters deployed. The Wingmasters (newer) have the dimple mag tubes and some have less than steel trigger guards. I would hazard a guess that late '70s to mid '80s produced Wingmasters were as good as the police models. All police shotguns from Remington are chambered in 3". Police magnums have heavier (thicker) steel walls in the barrels also. All police models have the "flexi tab" update to prevent jamming when a cartridge gets between the carrier and the bolt when in battery. Police magnums are only avaible in 12 gauge. When I took my 870 armorers course it was noted that a differently configured firing pin was installed also. The police magnums are built nuff said.

Parkerized?

Not all police magnums are parkerized, my latest BSN 870PM is deep deep remington Blued, much nicer than stinky old parkerizing. Just specify the right part number when you order.
