February Purchases

Got my 308 barreled action together. Had Jason at Gunco do it. Did a fine job. Now I need a stock and a few more small parts and she will be complete.
Turned this:

Into this:

I thought the markings would suffer from a blast and blue but they are as good as when I took it in.

What do you think your complete expenses will be when it's all finished? Do you do mail order from the U.S.? Or do you stick to Canadian sources/gun shows/gunnutz...etc?

The barrel was $300 alone, I could have done something cheaper, but figured in the end to get some quality piece. New Boyds stock set is going to be $100, receiver was $50, I figure about $250-$300 for all the small bits that go on the rifle and stock. Around $750-$800 when it's all done.

How much are those, ? quality? accuracy? restricted?

1. Too much; they are classed as a restricted import here (NZ) and the prices are steadly going up as availability declines.
2. Typical Norinco quality; average. The new Russian Saigas are better in my book but we can't get them with the 30 rounders.
3. Accuracy is typical for a AK, but I'll reserve judgement for when I fit a scope to it.

There is a method to convert the saiga's to AK mags, dont know if its NZ legal but woud be glad to point you in the right direction.

Finn Mosin M39

Couldn't wait any longer, otherwise they'd be gone. A "Shooter" grade from Collector's Source, a good deal at $275 + Taxes + Shipping.

Nice looking gun, shows very little use, and should be a good shooter - and it will be shot.

Only 3 more Carcano charger clips for me.
Doesn't really even count compared to you guys........ :(
Incidentally the nice little 1941 38TS Carbine I posted in January purchases turned out not so cheap.
If you remember I said it wasn't extracting.
Well, the entire bolt was stuffed. :kickInTheNuts:
I got another one: cher-ching!! $55.
With fitting and checking($25) my $90 cheapy has become a $170 dollar rifle! :runaway:
Not so happy about that, but I digress.
Hopefully next month we'll see the really cool milsurp purchase I've been lining up, so loong as the rotten thing will put them on paper.
Fingers crossed, eh? ;)

Nice M39 Andy :) Didn't know they had any left at that price. Is it all matching?

Sorta, but not really. The bolt has been renumbered to match - the old number on the bolt body has been nicely struck out, and four digits of the the new number stamped on the bolt handle knob.

I understand that Collector's Source has "a few" left. at $275 (~$350 delivered to me all taxes and shipping in). Included a correct M39 sling (I also have a SKY sling in my parts box ;) ). Compare with the laminated M91/30's at $250 - although they include a bayo and other stuff.

A nice gun, much different in look and feel from the Russians (which I also like). I will be shooting it, and if it passes muster, will use it in a Milshoot. :)

luckily the bolts aren't numbered ;)
Well, yeah, I guess.
What is REALLY fortunate, however, is the fact that throughout the 60 or so years that Italy used them the dimensions of the bolts and the actions themselves didn't really change.
Sure there were some refinements on the extractor and lug designs and the armories often updated bolts on the older rifles but a turn-of-the-century bolt will apparently work in the 1940s rifle, within reason of course.
And since a lot of the Carcanos spent long periods of time sans bolt in arsenals until they were needed again it's hardly surprising that they are interchangable.
But to return to the point I guess you could say the bolt matches...... ;) :D

I HAVE used them at milshoots :) All Finn M39s have renumbered bolt bodies as the bolts started life as Russian bolt bodies in different rifles ;) If everything else is matching then you have a matching M39 :)

I wish my non-SkY had only cost $350 delivered... but then it's a non-refurb 1941 straight stocked Sako, so I can live with the additional cost...
