Federal 209 VS Fed 209A

I do not know - from first hit on Google search, for what that is worth, "The 209A is a stronger, hotter primer than that older 209. The 209 "should" be safe to substitute in most loads since it will result in lower pressure loads, especially our lower pressure Cowboy type loads, unless you go so light that the 209A is needed to prevent squibby loads."

The Federal 209 primer was discontinued in 1991 and replaced with the magnum 209A. Do not interchange them in load data. The Fed 209 was a weak primer, little colder than the Remington 209 Premier. The story goes that Federal was having quality issues with the primer batches they were getting from Aliant/Hercules at the time, so they discontinued it and introduced a new much hotter primer, slighter warmer than the CCI 209M to distinguish the 2 products.

The Federal 209MZ is the muzzloader primer and is different beast again, not to be used in shotshells.
