Federal American Eagle Ammo - Mini Range Report

I recently ordered 5,000 rounds of American Eagle .22lr ammo with free shipping from Cabellas. This was a bit of a leap of faith, since I was not very familiar with this particular ammo. Until now my favourite bulk target ammo has been Federal Auto Match. I got the chance today to try the AE and compare it to a variety of different ammo in Elimsprint's back yard. This was not a very scientific test as I just shot one group of 10 for each ammo type. Here are the results (all targets shot at 50 yds, no wind, approx temp 0-2C):


10 rounds American Eagle $0.06/rd :

I was pleasantly surprised, this was my first 10 round group of the day and appears to be approx 11/16"

10 rounds Remington Target Rifle (made by Eley) $0.22/rd:

This was my best group of the day, approx 5/8"

10 rounds of Federal Auto match $0.07/rd:

I was surprised that the AE outdid my favourite bulk ammo, approx 1 1/8" group for the AM. This is a very typical AM group with one big hole and a few fliers.

10 rounds CCI green tag

I had never tried this ammo before, group approx 1"

10 rounds Federal Champion (blue box) $0.10/rd

approx 1 1/4" group

10 rounds CCI Standard Velocity $0.10/rd

approx 7/8" group

In summary I am pretty happy with the performance of the American Eagle. My DAR-22 functioned perfectly with it which was also great news.

I just started using this ammo this year and all of my guns run it well, even my Colt pistol. Nice shooting, btw.

Awesome ammo for the price. Works really well in my Henry -- seems to like the American Eagle a lot. really tight groups for a cheap ammo

Always liked the fed AE stuff. Glad I bought cheap and stacked deep a few years ago.

My 10/22T shoots it fairly well also and it cycles it better than most cheap ammo. Couple years back i fired two boxes of it without any malfunctions and that was enough for me to go back to town and buy a case of it Didn't hurt that a case was only about $175 or so

I just picked some up the other day when I hit the shop. Decided to give her a go as well...
Paid only $0.04 /rd so I was pretty pumped.

wow, surprised with the CCI std velocity. I get great results with it. Thanks for posting. I've seen some of the Federal red box around but only in the small 40-round boxes and at about 11 cents a round. I'll try a box though.

thanks for the review,my buddy and i just picked up a 5000 each and haven't had any opportunity to try them yet,still burning through multiple buckets of golden bullets.

I know from past experience that my rifle does not like CCI SV, others seem to really like it.
