Federal introduces 7mm Backcountry

Interesting. I wonder about reloading steel cases etc, but ballistically that's STW territory. Wonder what pressures they're running to get that? - dan
I imagine they are probably closing in on .277 Sig Fury territory, which would be 80,000psi. I'm keenly interested in the details around how to reload these cases as well, as Sig's hybrid alternative is more complicated and not sure how well they would reload either with the case being made of two different types of material.

Unless the ammo is relatively in-line with current costs and reloading doesn't require any prohibitively expensive equipment it could be interesting. I'm not holding out hope though. I bet that's where the global supply of RL-26 has gone :ROFLMAO:

I've reloaded steel military cases in the past, purely as an experiment. It's doable, but the failure rate is high. I don't think this (or the Sig) are designed with reloaders in mind. - dan

The Peak Alloy case is also reloadable when following Federal’s lab-tested processes and data.

I'm interested in what this means in particular.

I’m wondering if it requires a different type of reloading die or lubricant that likely won’t be cheap. It also tells me you won’t be able to buy cases from anyone but them.

Yeah, special dies and presses for the extra pressure steel requires maybe? And how many times can you reload them? With an annealing machine, and provided I don't screw up, I can make brass cases last a long time. Be I teresting to see what they come up with. - dan

This is a big one - I've had non-annealed cases go a half dozen reloads before I've tossed them (cartridge-dependent). Annealing has nearly doubled that and the cases *still* haven't failed, it's one of the things that has kept reloading affordable for me since I like premium components in general.

If reloading means once or twice and the cases are hard to find and expensive, I'll stick with my 280 AI and 7mm Rem Mag even though they are practically ancient and run the risk of bouncing off game these days :ROFLMAO: If case life is similar and costs aren't out to lunch it could be interesting, but Federal isn't running a charity so they will definitely want to move boxes of factory ammo.

I’m shooting handloaded Barnes 168 LRX out of my 24 “ 7 PRC at a safe pressure for 3150 FPS so I’m on pace with the Federal backcountry and Hope to be over 3200 with the New 160 gr LRX bullet. RJ
Do the petals tear off at close range with those speeds? That's impressive

Well, it may be new and very fast, but it would not be my first choice in a hunting cartridge- in fact it would not be my last either!
Steel cases, special dies, etc are not in my wheel house for a match rifle or a hunting rifle for that matter.....
