Federal introduces 7mm Backcountry

We’ve ordered reamers, going to rebarrel my 280 AI Defiance Rebel and see how it performs

If all goes sideways I’ll screw the 280 AI barrel back on

I’m thinking this thing is going to be great, should be testing by late Feb early March !!!!

We renamed this cartridge the
7mm British Columbia

There's a good review on Backfire on youtube. They compare the 7mm PRC with a 26" barrel and the 7mm Backcountry with a 16" barrel getting the same velocities. He stated that the ammo was going to be slightly less the the 7mm PRC ammo according to Federal. Only time will tell.

To me this is interesting if we could send an accubond 160gr at 3400fps using a 26" barrel instead. Would make a great long range elk cartridge.

Now imagine if someone makes a magnum ackley style 85k PSI case. Double the range in the same weight rifle.

On the flip side, you could make a lighter weight rifle while retaining 7mm-08 level power. .308 power in a .223 size case.

If 85k becomes the norm, all cartridges as we know them will become obsolete. Its kinda a big deal.

Where did you get reamers?? I’ve been on the hunt for one, google was no help….

I'd entertain the idea of this. I bought a X-Bolt 7 PRC this year, the goal was not to reload for it. Welp Hornady's ammo sucks. Slow as honey in the winter. I know I could reload for it and get some velocity outta it. But if I can buy ammo for this and run a 20" barrel and get the same velocity, why even keep the PRC? If i wanted the kind of velocity i'm getting i'd have bought a 7mm Rem Mag.

Not saying this solves any problems but its a cool concept.
Not sure why you would expect more velocity in a 7prc vs a 7rem mag as the rem mag has more case capacity.

Case design plays a large role in it.

WeatherbyFan on here has a 7-6.5PRCW and it pushes a 180 damn near fast as a 7 PRC does, and the 6.5 PRC case has a substantially less case capability than the 7PRC. (67gr vs 80gr I believe. Ish?)

If this was true the 30-06 would have made the 30-30 obsolete, and yet plenty of people still hunt with the 30-30 despite it being 130 years old.

It is certainly a step up in performance, but even if this cartridge is as successful as the PRCs and Creedmoors it is still not going to replace the vast majority of hunting rifles on this continent.

Plus, gun people are big into collecting and history, if this case technology became the new norm its not like everyone is going to rush out and dump everything they own for new guns using this technology. It will take many years, perhaps decades even, for this technology to replace brass cases as the "standard". There will certainly be SOME people rushing out to replace their 308win with a 308BackCountry to get that extra 200fps or whatever, but for most people that use a 308win for hunting they use a 308win because it works, they don't need that extra FPS, if they did they already have options for that in the form of 30-06 and 300win mag.

No groups to show accuracy though....🤔

I'm curious how steel cases can be resized. I'm sure there will be expansion with 80,000 PSI, although it is steel.

Lots of people have reloaded steel cases although they are the more traditional steel cases like surplus. You don't get much life out of them and it's not really cost effective though.

Federal says these cases are reloadable with extra steps.

Must be something to do with the alloy that makes it more elastic than the steel cases we're used to?

Although its not like you can't reload a steel case currently, but they're usually berdan primed and those are a hassle compared to boxer primed brass.

And I think that is what will make or break this cartridge. What sort of extra steps? How much hassle will it be and how much specialty gear is gonna need to be bought?... And what will "brass" life be like? How many loads can we get before splitting necks? Will these cases anneal like brass cases?

Thanks for that tip, I'll continue to lean towards the "no". The 7mm Remington Magnum offers so much, it may be my next purchase, not unless........................
