Federal Primers and the Lee Hand Primer

Federal primers used to be alot softer about 15 years ago, I had a S&W Model 10 PPC revolver that was set up for Federal primers when they used to come in the small boxes and when Federal switched to the huge boxes they have now the revolver would misfire because the hammer spring was not strong enough to fire them. I had to get a longer mainspring strain screw to increase the hammer spring force for reliable ignition.

Federal didn't like the autoprime idea, and they said so, Lee didn't like that, and said don't buy Federal.
Is there a valid arguement for this? Your guess is as good as mine.
Have I used Federals in the auroprime without incident? Yes, thousands.
Just excercise standard precautions, and don't do anything stupid. If you feel resistance, STOP.

The reason that Federal changed the packaging was for safety.

A few pallet loads of primers fell off a forklift and exploded, at the factory. This was about 15 years ago now.

I use Federal in my PPC revolver and never had a problem after the package change. In fact now I tend to use Federal exclusively.

Maybe your revolver spring was set up a bit heavier than mine but I did have to make adjustments to mine, strange but true.

I doubt it.

I was using the light Wolff mainspring. The trigger stop is set so that you cannot use SA, and DA was about 8#.

I went back to the factory mainspring due to a shortage of Federal primers and had to use whatever I could get.
