Feed problem on SKS-D

I thought a new mag had fixed it but I'm still getting missfeeds. Either the bullet will catch on the face of the chamber causing a jam or the bolt will fail to catch the bullet and not reload. In the second case I can see the marking on the bullet where the bolt passed.

It seems pretty obvious to me that the mag is sitting too low. Anyone have a suggestion on how to remedy this?

I had this problem with my SKS-D as well. Used to have to wrestle with the bastard while holding the bolt open. Then when I finally got the magazine seated properly I would have to let the bolt fly - lucky I never experienced any slam-fires. Eventually sold it - may get a "regular" SKS for cheap in the future. Sorry about the lack of helpful advice :)

I had that problem with my SKS-D and after examining it, I figured that the mag was sitting too low. I ran a file over the feedlips until it sat just a little higher and afterwards it didn't matter if I fired a single shot or let rip with the contents of the mag., it fed everytime.

To explain further, I took a fine file and ran it parallel across the top of the mag. There is a lot of meat on those mags and I didn't get anywhere near where the bullets were retained. Unassemble your mag. afterwards and get rid of all that fine metal dust though.

You should start with loading a mag. with two live rounds and slowly let the bolt forward. Observe just how much of the case is being touched by the bolt. You may see right there that it is only about 1/32 of a inch. That is when doing a little filing will improve the situation.

I think this is a problem common with most SKS-D models and why most people figure that they aren't worth the trouble.

Good luck with yours.

I figured the mag is cheaper than the rifle. If you go too much on the mag, bend the feedlips up a bit. If you mill too much off the rifle, get set for welding, milling, swearing, and maybe throwing the rifle away.

Try on one of those little 5 round mags first and if it works, you can do your AK mags.
