Hey guys, I'm brand new to the forum - have read some opinions here and there regarding the Marlin 336, but just wanted to get some feedback from anyone who's owned on before

I want to add an affordable & reliable lever action rifle to my small collection - it'll ultimately be used as a hunting rifle in some Alberta bush. I probably won't add optics to it right away either, as I want to keep the classic look

The 336W is the cheapest model, but I'm not entirely sure how much difference there is between models, other than some aesthetics and materials

Anyways, I appreciate all the feedback I can get in advance

Cheers,

J

I think better wood (hard wood) is all you get out of the C model. maybe its blued instead of the matte finish on the cheaper one. I had a 336y x2 that I wish I still had one laminated wood one hardwood. Both where great. Undoubtedly you have seen the Remlin post so I probably dont need to say look at them before you buy. But don't be afraid of a Rem made gun All the ones ive had have been good |( I inspected them)

Thanks CT, appreciate it! I haven't actually seen the Remlin post, I'll be sure to check it out

I've read probably 90% + positive reviews on the 336. It seems the earlier models might have had more issues than they do now. Who knows!

Thanks again for the reply

I have a newer Remington made Marlin 336C model with the walnut stock. I really like mine it is very accurate with its 4x Leupold scope. It also has a pretty nice piece of walnut for 'just a lowly 30-30' :) It has even bumped my M94 30-30 as my go to bush deer/bear/moose gun

I'd suggest looking for a used one. The new ones don't seem to be as well made and the older ones seems to have better wood...just from what I have seen though. I love my 30as and 1955 336 in 32. I have other high power and newer rifles but these two Marlin's always seem to find their way into the woods. Best of luck.

The 336W is the cowboy version (my take) that includes the slightly smaller forearm and the front barrel band. My opinion again is that it is the best looking Marlin. My experience is with a 70s model 444 with a similar setup and barrel band based on the 336 action. Outstanding rifle, maybe the best for Canadian bush. Marlins fit well and are easily scoped. I put a Williams receiver sight on mine when new and never regretted it. Minute of deer to 200 paces and quick as lightning. Preserving the lines with peep or barrel sights is both attractive but has a real handling plus. Nothing hand carries all day like a traditional lever, nothing.

If buying new inspect the rifle. There have been lots of reports of quality control issues with Remlins.
