Feedback on STI Spartan 9

I'm looking for feedback on the STi 1911 Spartan 9, any issues or problems with the 9mm Spartan, also feedback on competition with using it in both IDPA or IPSC, how well the aftermarket magazines function in the gun & so on.

would like to here from both owner & past owners. I used to own a 1911 Spartan 45 so I'm very happy with how it worked, just wondering if the 9mm model would be just as flawless.
 
Love mine so far, got it used with 200 rounds through it and has a armco 3.5# trigger job
Much tighter gun than i expected, and is very accurate for me. Havent had a single malfunction in feeding with the 9rd sti mags
Im going to shoot classic div and ESP with it, ordering tripp 10rd mags for this purpose and adding a ambi saftey and mag well. May have to do some weight shaving but we will see
 
I don't own one, but it's on my list. I've put a ~100 rounds down a Spartan, and maybe ~75 down a Ranger II. Fit is very good, and both seemed to shoot very well for me.

Maybe I can convince heavenIsALie to let me shoot his a bit at Tuesday night steel practice. ;)
 
Where are you getting the Tripp mags from? I have a Ranger II in 45acp and the gun is very nice, just don't know or here much about the Spartan 9 hence my asking about it. I'm in the market for a 9mm the toss up is a Spartan 9 or a Glock.
 
you just order then straight from the tripp site, they ship to canada for you

i always have it there :p and no holster so im not shooting it so its always free to use lol
 
I have a 9mm with about 900rnds down the pipe. Very accurate with a great trigger. No FTF but about 5 or 6 rnds out of 100 will FTE. It's only on the last round that it happens. I've been told a few different possiblilities but I haven't narrowed it down yet. Even so I wouldn't hesitate to use it for IPSC. TC
 
I have had my 9mm Sparty since August and shot probably 2000 rounds through it. Only recently had some FTE's. I detail stripped and cleaned it (cleaned the extractor) and it is GTG. Accurate as hell, works awesome. Love this gun, you will too.

PS: Should be fine for IDPA and IPSC. I see many shooters around here shooting STI guns for competition. They make the good stuff.
 
Short version: awesome

Long version: mine came from Armco with his lovely attention (trigger @ 3.5 lbs, polished ramp and extractor). The gun now has ~3600 rounds; it had a few double feed issues in the first 400 rounds. I switched from Rem Oil to Hoppes for lube and got a replacement extractor from STI and haven't had any failures ever since.

The stock grips are meh and the magazine well is tiny (normal for 1911); got VZ grips and STI 2 piece mag well and those made a world of difference. Next mods I will need are the oversized mag release and tune the grip safety to disconnect @ 1/3 travel instead of the current 1/2.

The STI (Metalform?) 9 rounds magazines are fine, but lack the extended base plate, so it's awkward to use them once you install the magwell. I have 2 Wilson EMT and 6 Tripp 10 rounders; they all work perfectly, but the Tripp are less expensive, better finished, easier to lead and easier to insert when the slide is closed, so go Tripp and don't look back.

Love mine. Over 2000 rounds. Only FTF i had were with the crappy MFS ammo, which is a function of the ammo not the gun. I use it for IDPA and its great.

Great info domyalex as well the rest of you that posted this is what I was looking for.

I love the 1911 guns now the hard decision is Glock or another Spartan but in 9mm, The Glock I was thinking of was a Glock 22 and getting a 9mm conversion barrel and I would get both a 40 cal & 9mm in one gun. problem with that is I would have to have more types of ammo on hand. I'm trying to keep things simple these days as costs go up & my wages are not.

domyalex can you post a pic of your Spartan with a Tripp 10 round mag in it. I would like to see how much it sticks out past the magwell.
 
that looks to be a fare price. I do get a better price per mag from Brownells on a Wilson 47D mag but the shipping & service fees are higher.

Looks to work out the same but I'm in the market for 4x 45acp mags right now and if I buy a Spartan 9 which is a good chance I will.

I would need 4x 9mm mags as well. my choice would be the Tripp or Wilson mags.

A Spartan 9 has been on my radar for some time. I likely will go the Armco tuned version myself if/when I make the plunge.

I picked one up before Christmas and have about 800 rounds down the pipe. Never had a problem with it and with hogue wraparound grips it's like heaven in your hands.

Yahooo, great choices. BUY BOTH of them. I love my STI Spartan 9mm for shooting and teaching. I compete with the Glock 34 however... :D

Both platforms are great value, magazines are easy to find/buy, parts are all around us. Life does not get better! :cool:

For the Spartan 9mm, I have Metalform 10 rd and 9rd magazines. They work well for our CQB matches at Borden. :) And I have to agree my 3.5 lb Spartan from Armco is my sweetest 1911 I have been able to afford.

Below are a couple of pics; in the last one Wilson ETM is on the left, Tripp is on the right. Gun has a Tripp inserted.

The *last* thing I want is to start a flame war (especially 1911 vs Glock), variety is the spice of life and all. That said, I had a Glock 22 and I couldn't sell it quickly enough. Everything about it was wrong FOR ME. I'm not bashing Glocks, they are ubber simple and extremely reliable, but *I* didn't like it at all.

All I'm saying is: if you get the chance, try the Glock out at the range, not just at the gun store and try shooting 50-100 rounds at the very least; full power .40 in a polymer gun was more than I enjoyed. My groups shrank to 1/4 at 7 yds by just switching gun.

I just emailed Gunner @ Armco to see what he doing extra to tune these guns for IPSC. I also just bought a Kimber conversion kit from him used ;) My plan now is to off load my Cz Shadow and will buy a Spartan 9 from Gunner.
