Feel a little sheepish.

I'm not into really modding any of my firearms , maybe a scope, sling, butt pad, that's about it. Never saw the point for the most part... but whatever floats your boat.

I removed everything that I'd added, put it back in it's laminate wood stock, re-attatched the bayonet, ditched the scope and all the other junk cluttering it up and I discovered

Good Job!

I discovered the same thing when I bought a Norinco M305. I did modifications out the yang to it in a dozen different ways including a fancy stock, cheek riser, scope mounts, flash hiders, and so much more. Now I have a simple M1A platform with a USGI stock, USGI sights and so forth. The only modifications was to change the spring guide and install the ARMS scope mount (that I don't use much, but it is there). I found out that I really enjoy shooting the old irons... and it makes a great day shooting when your friends are with you shooting some "irons only" M305/M14/M1A platforms too.

I could see having a lot of fun with friends with "almost as issued" SKS with iron sights. (I say almost as issued because I don't know if the SKS has the one nearly mandatory upgrade like the spring guide on the M305 is.)

I love how nimble and simple the SKS is in its original factory designation.
I recently put a Tapco'd Chicom back to OEM specs with salvaged parts.

Other than weight, and price; a stock SKS has nothing on this lol

1) It has a 4lb trigger job, and trigger over travel stop = because the stock SKS trigger SUCKS
2) Detachable magazine = because the stock SKS box mag SUCKS
3) A much more ergonomic stock WITH adjustable length of pull = because the stock SKS stock SUCKS
4) AK style mag release = because the stock SKS mag release SUCKS
5) POSP side rail system = because the stock SKS irons SUCK
6) bayonet and lug removed = because seriously ?

muzzle brake added because why not.

All of these comments are true but have all the mods really made a difference to the accuracy. I can hit a centre of mass target out to 200yards plus with the irons and milsurp ammo and that was all the gun was ever intended to be. Not sure you can really make up for the inherent inaccuracy of the gun. Still think the SKS is a great old school military rifle but a sniper rifle it will never be.

Some rifles were just never intended to be "modernized" while others just scream for it.

I will most often "modernize" so that I can add optics as my eyes will no longer focus clearly on open sights. Pity but that's life for ya!

I find people who like to brag about how they can shoot with iron sights, are the same kind of people who like to brag about catching a large fish on a light weight line.

I guess I'm one of those "kinds". The past four summers I've caught 30-40 lbs Sturgeons with 8 lb line no problem.
Combine that with not attaching a multitude of aftermarket stuff to my guns, (been there done that) I'm looking like the minority.

Someone mentioned earlier about adding to the buttstock on their SKS. This is about the only mod I would do to the gun for 2 reasons. 1) The firearm is a piece of history and should be treated with respect (even if it is Russian lol)
2) the firearm wasnt meant to be a modern rifle therefore trying to accurize it, in my opinion, is a waste of time and effort.

Believe me I am not bragging about my shooting with iron sights and I prefer optics as they improve my groups a lot. But, I don't believe everything you have to do to an SKS to get that improvement is worth the trouble. It is a $200 gun. At best the gun with milsurp ammo is 3-4 MOA and that is optimistic with most that I know of. In my view you are better of to buy an inherently more accurate gun (pretty much anything out there) and put decent optics on it. Now if you like to mod things because it is fun for you the SKS is a great relatively inexpensive way to go but a sub MOA sniper rifle it will never be.

And when it comes to fishing I have had fish lighter than the line weight break (yeh yeh I know how did I know what weight the fish was) my line so I guess I suck at fishing as well. Oh well, I still like my SKS but for what it is not what you wish you could turn it into. It is a very simple, solid, reliable semi auto combat rifle. Easy to strip and clean and incredibly tough. Accurate enough to do what it was designed to do. If I dent the stock I don't care it just adds character.

I never understood the point of buying a rifle that apparently"SUCKS" only to spend 3x what's its worth to make it enjoyable. Just buy a good rifle right from the start. Its like buy a beater civic and putting $4000 rims and tires on.
