Feel a little sheepish.

I never understood the point of buying a rifle that apparently"SUCKS" only to spend 3x what's its worth to make it enjoyable. Just buy a good rifle right from the start. Its like buy a beater civic and putting $4000 rims and tires on.

I used to have a $210 dollar Nikon on it.... but then id decided to switch ALL of my Red rifles to side mount, now the same scope can slid onto my SVT, SKS, or VZ 58 in about 5 sceonds. (just need to sight it in)

To be fair, I don't consider adding mounts and an optic as part of changing a whole rifle. Everyone's eyes are different and some need help.

I did it before. I'll never do it again. The simplest guns tend to come to the range more often with me. The more complex ones always left at home. You can't have fun when you're trying to zero a scope, zero it, the it looses zero, zero it again, take it home to clean it and you have to remove the scope to clean it, then take it back to the range to re-zero it again. If some people find enjoyment in that then you have way to much time on your hands. Although most people who play dress up with their guns don't even shoot.

There is also and element of skill and satisfaction when a shooter excels using a historic rifle in its original intended configuration, rather than taking shortcuts by completely changing every changeable part on the gun in order for the user to become more proficient with it.

Nicely put! That is the way I feel but didn't have the words.

I'm guilty as well, strange thing was that once I was done messing with it I hated it so much I gave it away.
It actually bothered me knowing that the unholy abortion was sitting in my safe. I couldn't even bear to undo the damage....after what I had done to her I knew I would never be able to look at her the same way again.

To appease the firearm gods that I so blatantly offended I went and bought a CZ 858 and three unissued, unrefurbed Russians, and that's the way they are going to stay.

As a retired military sort of guy 10 yrs infantry and 9 navy I got used to shooting with a pistol gripped rifle.when I got my SKS i tried like hell with the original stock and did ok with it. nice but now quite for me in standard configuration, after swapping to an ATI stock it smoothed out the rough edges on it for me put me in a much more comfortable (for me ) position I can adjust the length of Pull. so My friends can plink with it. then i wanted a scope after some research I decided on a WARTEK mount and now I can run any scope or red dot i want because it has a built in deflector . the flip side of that wa also to go to a removable magazine for ease of feeding rounds through this. when I go to the range with this I shoot anywhere from 100 - 300 rounds a day when i go with this. I have modded mine yes but not Because i have to but because i want to. to each his own I can shoot the wood stock but its not as fun for me.

I tried the tapco stock...hated it...the balance was all wrong, made the front of the rifle feel heavier, which became tiring while changing mags. From a supported firing position it would be ok, but from the standing, I find the original stock feels better. It also looks weird in an aftermarket stock with the original mag, but detachable mags don't load on a closed bolt without butchering the bolt. It just wasn't worth the time, money and effort, to have essentially the same gun, with a pistol grip. A scope would be nice, but stripper clips are so efficient...and you don't need to buy any mags...plus, unlikely as it is, god forbid, if #### really hit the fan, how many mags could you carry? when they're empty you gotta bomb them up again, where the original mag you just keep stuffing strips of cartridges into it. High cap mags were designed for automatic weapons. 10 rounds was plenty for a semi-auto battle rifle in those days...to truly modernize an SKS, the trigger and added pistol grip would need to be moved closer to the mag to maintain a good balance. but I think the SKS-D was about as modern as it should ever be...easy to release high cap mags...for military purposes, would have served just fine.

I find people who like to brag about how they can shoot with iron sights, are the same kind of people who like to brag about catching a large fish on a light weight line.

I've seen people catch deep water sailfish on 12-lb test line.

Well said.

This was just how I felt about it but i undid my changes, begged forgiveness and now I take her out all the time. Lol, I guess it really doesn't matter as long as you're enjoying yourself and actually getting out shooting!

I've had many SKSs over the years, done up in various ways, but currently only have three - a completely stock Russian, a D with an optic rail and no other mods, and a tacticooool Russian all decked out in an Archangel stock, XCR mag adapter, etc etc.

Turns out the only mod I actually like on any of the three is the Magwedge optic rail. The rest of it... not so much. Who knew. Might give the tacticool one to my dad. As it's my least favorite of the three.

I'm Interested as to what you think of the Xcr mag adapter, and what it is you don't like about it. I'm not too into the tac mods but that one looks like an improvement over the original fixed magazine, especially given the capacity increase provided.

Never felt the need to modify my SKSs or attempt to modernize the rifle. May drill and tap my Chinese rifle for a choate mount but that's about it. As it is right now I'm enjoying my rifles stock.

Other than weight, and price; a stock SKS has nothing on this lol

You must not shoot that thing the empties would beat the heck out of the scope.

The Russian PO style scopes hang far enough to the left that the emptys cannot hit the scope. On top of that, I moddified the ejection opening on that gun (featured in the DIY sticky of this forum) so the empties fly out much lower than your standard SKS.
