i accidently gut shot a coyote, i came up with a second shot to the heart about 200 yards after it ran, i hit it with my 223. i feel really bad, like, could you guys just tell me this stuff happens, like i have never wounded anything before.

You need to remember that it was not your intent. s**t happens.

This is how you have to look at it. You did not intend to cause unnecessary suffering, you intended to take the animal cleanly & did everything you could.

That being said, sometimes, luck is on your side, sometimes it is not.

Every hunter needs to strive to harvest animals cleanly, but, as fate would have it, it does not always happen that way.

Chin Up, practise & get back out there & enjoy your sport!

Cheers

Now, the worst thing you can do is feel bad about that coyote. If you do you will not be in the proper frame of mind the next time the opportunity of a shot presents itself and that could result in another wounding shot. Next time you line up on a live target, you can't think about the one you wounded, rather concentrate on the mechanics of the shot. What is the range, what is the wind, is there anything that the bullet might hit before it gets to the target? Get in the habit that as soon as the shot breaks you work the action as hard and as fast as you can without removing the rifle from your shoulder. Then and only then access the effect of your first shot, and determine if a follow up is necessary. Until your confidence returns, limit your shots to close range gimmes.

thanks guys, i am still feel a tad sorry for wounding it, no matter what it did its just nature.
but oh jesus did it stink when i gutted it.

Hey you should feel bad... about using the word "like" where it does not belong;)

at least you are concerned. too many people dont care about a quick kill, i know jackasses that would laugh and probably not even bother with a follow up shot.

You finished him off with a second shot right? Nobody likes to gut shoot anything but it doesn't sound like it suffered for very long. Im sure you will do better on the next coyote.

You wanna feel really bad?

Try wounding one when you have your Girlfriend tagging along taking pictures...shot one in the hind quarter while he was running across a field; started spinning around in circles, flipping, yelping. Needless to say she was screaming at me with tears running down her cheeks.:(

Luckily I landed a second shot that dropped it as it was spinning around in circles.

My f*cking heart was pounding out of my chest and the GF was in hysterics; it was a good time.:p

After she calmed down we walked up to it (258 paces!) and found that the second hit him in the head blowing most of the right side completely off.

The GF doesn't come Coyote hunting with me anymore...

feeling bad at a miss placed shot is good...
we need more hunters like you out there...
next time take that extra second to line up your shot..

congrats on your yote:cheers:

If my eyes where still good as they used to be, I would have shot off the front paws and then had a cup of tea, then do him in. They are nothing but garbage, pieces of fur crap! The whole gene pool should be wiped out on those things!

BWAHAHAHA!!!!! Awesome!!! I would loved to have been the fly on the wall to watch that play out.

Question is...while you were trying to draw a bead on said yelpng, circling 'yote....was she yelping, circling in hysterics too? :D :nest:

I use the coyotes for practice targets. Once i am consitently killing coyotes at a said range, then i will start to confidently shoot at big game at those ranges. Until then, i chalk the ones i wing up as experience (and i make a point of finishing them too)

Now really, i hope you meant gutting with a bullet, not a knife. I am pretty sure there is a food bank if you are that hungry.
