FELLOW DEALERS READ THIS: Shocking Fraudulent Transaction!!!!

Would EMT's be better for high price items? Sad but so many dirt bags are out there hitting elderly and honest people. No integrity. Sorry for your loss.

Not necessarily. EMTs can be sent from hacked accounts, and then the legitimate owner of the account notices the money missing and the bank reverses the transaction. It’s a pretty common scam on FB Marketplace, Kijiji, etc. If anything I’d say it’s less secure than a credit card transaction.

They say to never use EMT and only do face to face deals on those websites, which is the complete opposite of what we do in the gun community, but we have things like the CGN trader rating system and PAL verification to protect us so we’ve gotten pretty used to it.

I don't know why all businesses don't provide EMT as an option. Is it expensive/difficult to setup for a business? Maybe requires a new e-commerce system purchase/upgrade I guess?

If EMT is an option for any private/business transaction, I always use EMT.

I’m the opposite, I never use EMT if I’m buying from a business. I want the protection of a chargeback in case the retailer screws me around which has happened from time to time, though not common. I also want the points/cash back. With EMT you get none of that.

Sorry this happened to you.

My limited experience tells me it may not have been the canada post person.

I've received 2 guns through canada post. Both had signature required.

The first was taken to the local depot (a shoppers drug mart) and I was given a card for pick up.

When I went to the depot, I found I had forgotten the card. I simply told the clerk my home address, and she searched the pile of parcels until she found mine. She did not ask to see my ID. She did tell me I had to sign, and as I always do in such situations, I simply scribbled a squiggly line on the pad. She accepted that (I have never not had that accepted, ever at any store) and I left with the gun.

So to summarise: I had no pick up card, no ID, and no real signature. And I left with the gun!

The second gun was my recently arrived marlin. This time the CP did bring it right to the house, which I appreciated. He also did not request or check any ID, and he also accepted the squiggly line I made on the signature line. The only real improvement there is that, obviously, he knew the parcel was at the right address, and also it would have looked pretty obvious that I was the resident of that address. So I think we can give him credit for personally confirming the address and occupant, but all the same there still was no ID check or real signature.

Those are just 2 experiences, but they do lead me to believe that canada post would not be hard for a scammer to bypass.

I reckon EMT and with delayed shipping plus some verification from buyer's bank would be good enough if that's possible.

My CGN account got hacker last year after I used in the morning at my home computer, no idea how that happened, never logged in from anywher else. a couple of guys did lost their money to the scammers as I was having good rating and registered longer enough to rise caution. EMT is not preferred for 3rd party trades, but with a business, I don't see much problem with it.

Verification from the buyer's bank is not something that they're really set up for. Interac handles the transaction and tries to be as hands off as possible. And you'd likely need to delay shipping a week or more which I'm sure the buyer wouldn't be happy about.

Like I said in another post I'd still prefer to have the option of a chargeback but for the most part EMT wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. The problem remains on the business's side though, it's no more of a guarantee than credit cards.

You know a great way to fix all of this...
Support your local gun shop and do to the store.
I know it's crazy idea... but...

Seriously with respect...You know I am the DEALER, just like you are? I guess you NEVER want customers doing online orders from you? How does it help me as a dealer to not take online orders? I had an online order and got taken for $4700, and National Bank, Canada Post and Mastercard told me in no uncertain terms to take a hike. Even the Montreal Police Service aren't interested in this case.....

Furthermore, there are less than 20 Leica dealers in the entire Canada....To which local store would people go to buy a Leica Geovid Pro?

Fraud Prevention tactics are much like locks , they only keep the honest person out . Unfortunately , crime is on the rise , and property crime and fraud is a very low priority for the police , and even if someone is caught , they get a slap on the wrist as the Courts don't seem to care either .In the OPs case , I would think there would be some type of camera system in place at the Post Office that would show who picked the parcel up , but maybe their video is automatically erased after a certain amount of time. Fraud is low risk , high reward , for the criminal , so expect it to get a lot worse in the future .

A more realistic solution is not to allow purchases of high value optics without prior purchase history?

What I was trying to get across. Is they it's much harder do defraud a business. At the store level.
I'm a very small dealer also and could not handle a$5000 hit like that.
So we don't sell high-end optics on line.
We did get hit a few time for tripods and dot sights .
I spent many years working in loss prevention, so has my general manager so we see the signs.
But if you company only sells optics, it's going to be a rough time.

Ah, got it!! Sorry, didn’t mean to be an ass. Yeah, it’s tough sometimes - the bulk of my orders are referrals from other customers, but I’ll just make sure I match the phone number from the bank with the one I get on the order too.

And I’m in the process of looking for insurance cover as well.

It irks me the that world has become so full of crooks. But it is what it is. I was hoping to share my experience with other dealers. Hopefully it helps a couple of potential fraudulent sales to be spotted before someone else loses money!!

Cheers

Robbie

This is what happens when 1.2 million new unskilled folks pour into Canada… add that with the fact that there are little to no consequences for them because that would be racist and you get this!

Majority of the fraud where I used to work was committed by Indians.

Hell, I regularly watch Indians stroll up to peoples houses and empty their mailboxes and steal their parcels.
Not hard for one of these folks to get a credit card and other information and then use it.

This is the Canada Justin and his merry band of diversity hires want for us.
Everyone thinks retailers will get rid of brick and mortar and use online? Not a chance.

Also when they all are named Aman Singh.. good luck..

Why the #### Canada lets then all use the same last name of Singh or Kaur is beyond retarded. Last names serve a purpose as a unique identifier for people.

Yeah unfortunately Canada used to be a high trust society. That wasn't diverse enough for liberals. I'd recommend just taking EMT only for high end purchases, not everyone will be happy but its getting to the point where its WHEN this will happen again, not if. I think most folks will understand.

All good man.
I feel for you.
I'm wondering if maybe a network of retails could be established when someone like you ships said item to say a,store like ours and the store does the full check of ID card number and makes thr person sign for it.
For a fee.
You would video. Signed documents, and verified ID.
And if it was fraud thrn the ability to call the police on the spot

Wouldn't the Canada Post outlet have a security camera to identify who picked up the package?

Seems like an easy thing to do, since they would have the exact time when the package was picked up.

In the OPs case , I would think there would be some type of camera system in place at the Post Office that would show who picked the parcel up , but maybe their video is automatically erased after a certain amount of time.
Typically the video will stay in a system for 30-60 days so hopefully the OP follows up within that time frame.
