Just doing some dry fire practice tonight with the M&P9 and got looking at the trigger safety closer. How much free play do you guys have in the trigger safety before the spring comes under tension?

I have a good 1/16" free play with no spring tension. Just wondering if this is on par with you guys or if I need to keep and eye on it. The trigger safety still functions 100% so no issues there. The rnd count is about 2200-2300.

I hope I described it well so you guys know what I'm talking about :D

2300 rounds is not a small number, just replace the spring because they do wear down over time. For example, my 1911A1 has a Wilson Combat spring and buffer in it, which specifies to replace the spring every 1000 rounds. Things wear out eventually. Find a online site who has factory parts for the M&P in stock, I bet it costs no more than a buck. Or maybe a local metal supply shop has springs in your area.

That part broke at 37,000+ rounds in Todd Green's torture test, after more than 7,400 rounds without cleaning. It is a regular replacement part, but I'd order one well in advance. Probably around 5,000 rounds. (In fact I'll be ordering one soon) MD Charlton will order the part in for you if it's not in stock (probably not). With mine 1,000 rounds is maybe three trips to the range (if I'm short of time). I've got replacement recoil springs but I'm not there yet, this pistol is just over 4,000 rounds and not hammering the locking block yet, and a replacement striker assembly, but no indications to change. I'm thinking the trigger spring should be done at around 10,000. I'll see if I can find out what Smith says. You can't compare a 1911 to anything else, especially not an M&P. I completely resprung my Norc Commander at 3,000 due to the wear caused by the loads I shoot.

Just to be sure we're talking about the same spring, the one I am wondering about is not the main trigger spring just the one that keeps the tension on the trigger safety (lower peice if the trigger that moves). Or are these one in the same?

ajay,

I think that if you check it out, the recommended replacement is for the shok-buff, not for the spring. Unless you are using a very light spring you don't need to replace the recoil spring in 1911 for about 3-5000 rds of ball equivalent loads - not that it hurts, I'm just sayin'. ;)

I change my recoil spring and firing pin spring at the same time at about 5000 rounds for both my 1911's and both of my Browning High Powers. I'm on pretty much the sme rotation for my M&P's...

Sounds about right, mine has about the same. No worries.
The feel is getting better though, right ?

I checked my trigger, and there is tension from the start. It can move forward about 2 mm, but it sits right where the tension starts. Make sense?? My M&P has 1200-1400 through it.

Yup you're right, not the same. Actually on the exploded diagram it shows no spring in the trigger, the lower part of the trigger deflects a tab between the mounting ears on the upper part of the trigger, which provides tension to keep the trigger straight. Shouldn't be an issue at all, the worst that can happen is that it becomes a little sloppy over time.

Where did you find an exploded view of the M&P and would like to have that?
