Hi all . I'm usually pretty good at sourcing / scrounging materials like lead for casting , and making homemade tools to help in the loading of oddball calibers , on a budget.
I've been trying to find a source for fairly stiff felt to make cushion wads for .410 all brass shotshells.
Any ideas?
I know cork will also work , old ceiling tiles , etc , but I wanted to try felt with a card wad under it.
Felt seems to be quite costly to buy new. Any used felt around from the building industry ? or industrial applications?
Places like Circlefly have everything I need , but I don't want to buy bags of 500. It's way too much for my needs. It's a kind of a novelty cartridge to me , and after I make a few , test-shoot a few , and store a few away for future use , I'm pretty much done with it. It's not something that I would shoot on a regular basis. Mostly just playing around , and having fun with the whole process of making them.

You can buy felt in small packs meant to go on the bottom of chair legs. Some are pre-punched sizes, but some can be in solid sheets to cut to size.
Think Walmart....Home Depot....

I just buy fiber wads from Rusty woods, $21/500. I would rather be shooting than spending my time cutting wads.

I have used felt insoles and boot liners. Keep in mind that they might not be wool, and could contain heaven only knows what synthetics.
Make my wadcutters on the lathe, use the drill press to cut out the wads.

Princess auto sells a set fairly cheap set. Larger size, put in a lathe, carbide burr. Burr is put in tool head. Punch is clamped to carriage increased in diameter all the way up to the hole in side of punch. A metal table leg works. Tapered and hollow. Cut and check inside diameter, sharpen outside diameter. I welded a piece over the top and cut a hole in the side for wads to be shaken out.
Depending on where you cut the leg you can vary the diameter. When you don't want to wait for punches to arrive in the mail and you want to shoot today not next week I will find a way to play.
