What do you do when you see feral cats on one of your grouse or deer hunts :?: Are you allowed to shoot them if they are harrassing game like grouse or pheasants :?: I see this happening where I hunt but they are out of shotgun range and I don't want to be shooting rounds off in my hunting area unless its at big game like deer. :?

I don't think there are any MNR regs concerning feral cats. I would think they should be considered small game in my neck of the woods and might be okay to hunt year round, much like a skunk. This is an interesting question.

What many people do not realise is that feral cats are more of a problem than raccons or any other animal when it comes to spreading rabies
Another litlle known and unadvertised fact is that the MNR has killed more feral cats than any other problem animal in the wild
You see a feral cat do it a favor and shoot it

It is my belief if you are in an area where you can load and discharge a firearm safely and legally, free running cats and dogs are legal targets.

Kaboom on the cats for sure.

The feral cats have been out of my range with the shotguns but I'm going to think about erasing some of them when I have the rifle in hand. The last thing I want to do is find a collar on the critter saying " My name is Fluffy, if you find me please call blah, blah, blah.

Aim for the neck. Use appropriate caliber. But then my opinion doesn't matter as I don't live in Canada. Anyone have any good cat recipies? :) Actually the neighbors wiener dog kills more stuff than the cats do here. Furry little tree rats mostly.

Check your local hunting regs closly, and esp' the local Animal cruelty mandates.
Often even while Feral the Cats are governed under laws for Domestics, and have to be handled as such.

Also shooting stuff that you are not hunting gets you the title of SLOB hunter, and gives the Antis fuel.

Besides which Cats spreading Rabies is a myth that goes back to the middle ages.

Clinical research has shown that Rabies in Domestic cats has a very short shelf life..ie the animal drops dead very very quickly of said disease, and they are not social animals with there own kind, and take great pains to avoid each other unless it is mating season.

Where as Coons survive Rabies allot longer, and often live in social groups (to a point), which can spread Rabies further.

Out here in BC in 10 years of dealing with Feral Cats in and out of shelters, and vet clinics I have never seen a case of rabies in Cats. Best to leave them be...they sort themselves out.
