I went to the range today and I am still playing around with a load for the TC hawken I have.
I was able to Chronograph it 90gr pyrodex fff in the pistol with a round ball was 1797 fps.
My question is what will 90 grains of fff P do versus 90 gr of ff RS?
I know that the FFF burns hotter so will it fly faster and flatter?

You will get slightly higher vel. and pressure with triple f similar with cart. rifles, however fouling can be harder, and more work to remove from barrels and brass. In the muzzleloader, a dry wipe between shots may not be enough, you just have to try both.
 
I have noticed the fouling, I let it go yesterday to see how bad it got and the shots were all over and theramroad would not go down anymore for cleaning until I soaked it.
I think that it has a bit more kick as well with the fff.
 
strange..... i shoot 70g fff pyrodex with my hawken and .490 round ball's with TC prelubed .015 patches and i havent had any noticeable fouling buildup to the point it get's hard to load.... i do wash a fair ammount of gunk out at the end of the day tho....

what lube are you useing on your patches?
 
I find far less fouling when I use 3f than 2f, and also find that real black powder cleans up easier than Pyrodex at the end of the day. The recoil on my .54 is real noticable when I use 3f.

I am using prelubed patches the TC pillow ticking ones.
I am trying a bit of everything and awhile back was using saboted round balls and they gum the barrel up bad, I think the plastic must just melt up in the barrel.

Does anyone use minis for hunting? If so what kind?

Snowshoe- Excuse my ignorance, what is real black powder, I know that Pyrodex is a replica powder.

Black powder is the orig. propellent, made of charcoal, saltpeter, and sulpher(i think), discovered about 1000 yrs. ago. Today it is still used in muzzleloaders and cartridge rifles and is usually more accurate than anything else in guns it was meant for. It is harder to ship because it is considered an explosive and is manufactured by at least 4 makers(imported), GOEX/USA, Swiss/Swiss, Wano/Germany, KIK/Slovenia, etc. For the shooter, real black powder is much easier to ignite than the replicas. I use "real" black powder in reloads for pistol, rifle and shotgun and wouldn't dream of using a replica. Many competitions using older guns and/or replicas do not allow replicas(pyrodex). For the experienced shooters out there this was a quick roundup and not meant to be gospel and I'm sure lots of people will want to pick holes in it. I just find it funny/odd that people are steered into using products(by the media mainly) that are replicas and not as good as the orig. product and don't know about it.
Real black powder was used to fight the wars until 1900 as thats all there was, it was used in days of the wild west, it was used to exterminate the buffalo among other things, some, like myself consider it the best gunpowder!

I have tried about everything I could get my hands on, from sabots and REAL bullets to patched round balls. I even shot a few whitetails with sabots, and bore sized lead bullets, but now I only use round balls. My .50 and .54 have 1 in 48" twist barrels and they shoot a patched ball very well, and are more than enough for hunting whitetails and even larger game. I cast my own balls, cut my own patches from pillow ticking, and even make my own Moose milk and Moose snot for the patches. It makes me feel good, so I do it. Having fun is what it's about.
 
Per grain of powder, you'll develop somewhat higher pressures with FFF than FF. Be careful as you approach 100gr with either, but especially FFF - you can overpressure the barrel/breech. FFF burns faster, building up more pressure before the ball gets out the barrel.
 
I don't think I would go over the 90 gr mark, it has a heck of a lot more kick and why use so much powder?

Thanks for the help, I have enough trouble trying to get the powder I have up here without trying to get real black powder, thats why i am into the pistol now because i have no more rifle powder.
