FG 42 Semi Auto Reproduction

Rick at SMG Guns will NOT be selling these to Canadians any time soon. I asked him a year ago, and I asked him last week.

It's not happening.... Too expensive for the export permits for such a small Canadian Market.

Plus, if one does make it in, it still needs to be classified by the RCMP firearms lab....

SSD and their Type 1 seem to be the only option still.

My guess would be because surplus 8mm has gone the way of surplus 7.62x51, .30-06, .303, etc. Hell even factory ammo is nearly impossible to find. Went to Cabelas the other day and out of all the ammunition they had on the shelves (and I'm talking THOUSANDS of boxes) there were exactly TWO boxes of 8mm. Given the amount of Mausers and such in existence I expected better for this great cartridge.

That would make sense as to why they made them in .308 cal instead of 8mm. But the guy I was asking said they were in 8mm. but surplus and handloads were a no go! Handloads I understand because of warranty issues but I was asking why no surplus? It would originally be made to shoot milspec ammo. It's a moot question though if these are in fact .308 caliber I was just curious as to his statement.

I would have thought that commercial 8mm. would be more available as well! It's a great cartridge and there seems to be quite a few People that haves guns in 8mm. so selling it shouldn't be a problem. Hell I've had mine out as a backup for moose hunting a couple times.

FWIW, they sell these in both .308 AND 7.62.

The manufacturer won't sell to Canadians, but you could have someone like irunguns or Prophet River buy one for inventory at the US FFL and then export it, though the RCMP would have to inspect it and give it the nod before you could take posessoin. Get ready for a wilfully incompetent bureaucratic runaround by Etter and his gang of thugs at the lab. They are NOT shooter friendly and act every bit liek the Liberal appointees that they are.

You can apply for a individual export permits, if the company does not have a export permit, that is how Troy operates.

I believe that SMG has to apply for an ATF "special permit for foreign sales", and that them selling to another 2nd party in the US (ie: IRunGuns), and then them importing said rifle into Canada is a big NoNo....

Again, if this was still possible, it's a big headache as it would still need to be OK'ed by the RCMP and the rifle and funds paid for the rifle will be tied up for an indefinite amount of time...

And for the tiny market in Canada, who is willing to take this on???
