Fg GOEX powder in a .54 flint ?

Anyone is using Fg powder in .54 flint ? I know FF or FFF are better, but the only source I have would be for Fg powder at the moment. I beleive it should still be better that any substitute ? What do you think guys? (by the way i have some FFF powder for the pan but I dont have a lot)

Why not try it? After all isn't 1.5 FG Swiss popular for BP cartridge rifle?
Your velocity might be lower but at your expected hunting distances who cares right ??

At most it would probably burn a little dirtier and the velocity maybe a little lower

If ratios hold true - then knowing that fffg is about 10% hotter than ffg that should mean fg is the same 10% less than ffg. If you are using 65 grains ffg in a Bess then 70 grains should give the same result with fg. Worth a try in my mind and after all - it is "black" so slow burning and puts more flame out the end of the barrel in worst case, Cheers

if your bess has a vent liner, the coarser powder will probably not be able to enter the inside of the liner and you may have either delayed ignition or no ignition. For that reason you may have to turn the gun sideways and tap the stock a few times to get some 3F from the pan, into the vent liner. My own experience has been that when chronographing 2F and 3F in a 54 cal percussion rifle and about 50 grains charge (can't remember exactly) I had 100 fps slower with the 2F. That suggests to me you will get about 100 fps slower with 1F relative to 2F and 200 fps slower relative to 3F for similar charges in the 70 grain range

thanks guys, How about measures ? If i'm using a 60 grains fff load in my .54 flint, how will i measure the same load in Fg, since the granulation is not the same ?

.54 is the start caliber that can use such coarse granulation as Fg powder. I would use FFFFg instead of FFFg in the pan for hunting use only because the lock time is faster.

I understand, but should I measure it the same way I do for FFF ? The heavy granulation will give me a higher volume reading wont it?

Sainsbury mentioned that there's about a 10% difference between graduations but I would assume that's a rough estimate.
Start with the measure set the same as used for fffg and work your way up looking for the same feel, point of impact or velocity if you have access to a chrony.
